Afternoon all/ Baking again here and the humidity is up as well. The cheeps are all in hide mode in any kind of shade there is laying down. My yard is so quiet I have to keep looking out to make sure everyone is still alive! We need rain real bad here. My lawn has gone hardpan and the runs are dustbowls. At least the coops are nice and dry! The little monsters went to bed by themselves last night. They are digging pits by the rails of the run so I had to drop the sides to keep them from tunneling out. The boys are constantly challenging each other and they are only 6 weeks old. The black sexlink girls are just as bad. I hope it doesnt get ugly between them and their mothers when I combine them. Their moms (barred rocks) are tough cookies and will only yield to The Duke. He doesnt take crap from any of the girls. He is a great roo though. Hasnt missed a threat yet and is right on top of everything. First roo I have ever trusted, even when my back is turned.

Legolas is out with his ladies today. They are laying in the shade in front of the house. He still comes out like a 600 pound raptor every morning, charging down the ramp to get me. I let him have his fantasy cause he is small and cute and harmless!

Looking forward to chickenstock at the end of the month and meeting some of you who are on here. Sounds like Rancher may be back sooner rather than later! Gilly--if you come to chickenstock Im sure one of us could enable, I mean help, you with some chicks. Lots of chicks! I may be deaf by the time I arrive with 16 chicks/chickens in my car. I just hope its nice enough to have my windows open to let out the chicken poop stink!

Busy crocheting lots of baby stuff. Suddenly everyone at work is pregnant. Its like a freaking virus there. Thank goodness I am too old and had that factory disabled years ago! I keep telling everyone to just say no!!!

Were all good.. We spent last summer getting our house ready to sell and then found out were having another baby ( #5 ) so took the house off the market. But I have been supper busy and haven't been on much. And I'm prego so I'm trying not to play with the chickens to much lol.

I've actually heard pretty good things about The Poultry Place in Clifton Springs, and am thinking of getting some Brahmas, LF Cochins and turkeys from them.

A good friend of mine, who sells and breeds high quality heritage ducks and other fowl, gets *some* of his birds from there. I know he gets his turkeys at least.

He suggested I check them out if I couldn't source local reputable Brahma and Cochins.

Is that "The Poultry Place" on Taylor Road, in Clifton Springs?

I just talked to them and they seem very nice and LARGE. They have an impressive list of birds...The guy that I spoke with said that that they hatch all the breeds there, that they don't order from any hatchery...They seem to have almost any chicken that you could want from the common to the more rare...They also have a long list of geese, turkey, some guineas, and a good amount of ducks...but they don't carry any Magpies.

so they already have a bad mark for me

...Oh well...we'll see I know that there has been a lot of people that have bad opinions of them so the real verdict is out on them..

??? He also said that they recently got a memo that Ideal Poultry has Merricks?...Not sure how much truth there is to it..definitely something to look into it for anyone that is planning on ordering just to be sure.

Mainly Eggs but  Bug Control is a plus as well! looking to start with around 6 chicks Love all the variety of colored eggs too! Thanks for the reply!

Will you be coming to our chickenstock at the end of the month? Lots of opportunities to get birds there! It's also fun to get to meet everyone and there is a potluck and a raffle too.

Holy hanna its hot out. Cant keep my sugar up either. Just hauled water out to the coops so everyone could have a fresh drink. Little monsters had emptied one of their bowls and reds were almost out as well. I swear my tomato and cucumber plants grew and inch today. They are loving this heat. Please God send us some rain!!!

Dave's Garden is a good site for hatchery reviews. And don't believe everyone, go with the majority, no matter what you are reading reviews on there is always going to be some unhappy people.

I live South of Ithaca and Just finished our Crooked Coop! I will post pictures at some point but am about ready to get chicks for it. Any recommendations of a local hatchery to get them from? have thought about taking the ride up to the poultry hatchery but have read bad reviews. has anyone been there? Thanks!

Welcome to the thread! Congrats on getting the coop done prior to getting chicks. So many of us (myself included) are tempted by cute little fuzzy butts prior to having the coop completed & then they grow like weeds & yikes! I'm not far from you, out by Watkins Glen.
I have been to the poultry hatchery & even gave them a second try, burned both times by hidden fees and them not having what I ordered even after they had confirmed w me they did. It's been a couple years now so maybe they've changed their ways. I know they've changed their name and their location but I had assumed they were hiding from their poor reputation, but who knows.
There are many great poultry breeders in this state with nice quality birds. Chickenstock is one place to find chicks. Sometimes craigslist has interesting chicks. Are there certain breeds u are interested in? There may be someone on this thread w chicks available of interest to u.

Yeah it's hot out! Just finished rototilling a new garden. Mowed as close as I could and tilled up a 25x50' section. Easiest time I ever had with our little tiller, it's so bone dry the sod disintegrated. Usually in the wet spring it balls up and I fight with it. Seems like we went from frozen ground and snow right to summer. Our peas are only a few inches high right now and its in the 80s. Usually we have them in so early it snows at least once on them.

I just discovered a strange scientific phenomenon.  My barn is 5 times further from my house when I am trying to collect eggs during a thunderstorm with pouring rain!

Funny, same thing happens at my house. & it's not just in thunderstorms. The chicken house seems to grow legs & run away from me in snowstorms & windy sleet. I sure hope we're done w snow for the year, but would anyone really b surprised?
