NY chicken lover!!!!

If your hosting I won't complain about the date. Unless of course it's in winter.

Picked up some more fabric for chicken aprons. How were they received?  JoAnns has a sale on fabric. Of course its DW who does the work. :lau

What sorts of thing go well in the auction?

I wanted an apron but never got the chance, got busy with everything else. Looking forward to getting one this time around.

I was unable to get an apron last time. Would certainly love the opportunity to pick one up in September.

Friday was working a case in Sprout Brooke ten mile from where they tracking the cell storms 96 yr old client, dish went out, radio doesn't work, no cell phone for alerts, power goes out dead flash light! Tea light candle my way wicked set steps to the car radio five min. then back to client so went the night. Between the storms and the blasted fire works my poor BC been a nervous wreck feels his safest on my lap. (50#) I lost a Moran hen today fine when I put them out tonight she was dead with bloody butt and lavender orp. standing on her other two seem fine.

Rancher if you want help be welling to trade labor for some herbs only about an hour away been looking for solid reason to go to Wegam.

Just FYI NBT bank charges you five dollars to cash a check even though it's drawn on their bank, if you the cashier don't have an account with them.

Evening all. Eowyn has the babies out in the run and everyone is helping her with them. Only problem is getting them back in! I just had to go wrangle two of them for her and pop them in the coop. Babies. Arina is sitting tight on her eggs still and the babies climb under her sometimes. Luckily both mommas get along so it's not an issue.

I may or may not make a Sept chickenstock. A lot will depend on work.

I swear the little monsters are growing an inch a day. At ten weeks they are as big as their parents. Must be the turkey starter/grower they are on. 21 percent protein. I do see a difference between last year's and this year's chicks. Been mixing the layer pellet with the turkey pellet and that seems to be working well for the terrorists. Switched my silkies to turkey pellets for the higher protein and mix a little layer in that. It has helped put a little weight on them.

Finally got two strawberries ripe on my plants and I find rodent teeth marks on them!

I told Dh it was open season on the chipmunks and gave the berries to the chickens. I will not lose any more berries to the rodents. This is war. I will win.

Raining again. Hopefully all night as we need it and my plants will be happy.

Broody drama update.

Well, broody 2 is pretty much out as a candidate for raising chicks. She has nary looked at the nest all day. Broody 3 spent more time off the nest than a broody should...but I'm not sure if it was because she was being harassed by our speckled sussex, as well as our super obnoxious EE hen, George. For some reason, George is fixated on any nest that has eggs...she is the reason Broody 2 got all turned around last week. The problem is that George never ever sits long-term. Ever. She just thinks she's broody.

So I brought Broody 3 and her sacrificial eggs into the house and put her in the brood box. She was not happy...and did not sit right away, but has since settled down. I was hoping my incubating eggs wouldn't actually hatch until tomorrow but...two of them are zipping as we speak.

Its a long shot but, I put one of the zipping eggs under Broody 3 in the hopes that she will adopt the chick. If she does, than I will put the other newly hatched chicks under her. If she doesn't (and I'm watching closely), than she's going back outside and I will brood the chicks myself. That kind of stinks but...c'est la vie.

So fingers crossed Broody 3 feels up to being a mama hen. I don't have high hopes but...you never know. Maybe she'll surprise me.

In the meantime, Attila the Hen is doing a much better job protecting her chicks than when they were initially hatched. She's turning into a pretty good mama. Too bad I can't give her the new chicks that are hatching today and tomorrow.

Edited: Well...I guess that's going to be a big fat no. When the chick pushed out, she immediately tried to eat the shell...while the chick was still partially in it. I took the shell away and she started pecking at the chick and then left the nest and went to the other side of the box. I gave her a few minutes but...I don't think she's ready/interested/broody enough.

Oh well...guess I'm brooding these myself, lol.

Not sure that I will make it to September. Come August the second half of the year gets really busy for me, but I am going to try.

My delaware hen that got her head pecked open looks much better today. Still looks bad, but is looking better then it did. I have been putting antibiotic cream on it. She is getting feisty and pecks at me when I reach in the crate especially if I don't have any treats for her. I just wish that she would stop kicking shavings onto her head. I am trying to keep it as clean as I can and I have to be really careful cleaning out the shavings. She still keeps her eyes closed most of the day. I don't know if she is board, has a head ache, or if the pecking to the head did some brain damage?

These were tonight before I got her washed and put the cream on.

Lamberts EMT gel from TSC works wonders on wounds. I've been shocked at what it does. Rapid healing, pain reliever.

"EMT Gel interacts with the wound site and enhances the body's natural healing ability by supplying the collagen necessary for the formation of new tissue. Wound treatments such as iodine, peroxide or antibiotic ointments destroy the body's own natural defenses and actually slow the healing process."

I will look into it tomorrow! Thanks
