Your friend and fellow chicken addict,

Rancher, never give up, never surrender, Hicks

Thanks! I needed that.

I have 1 of 38 eggs hatched, still getting fluffy, and a few more mid hatch. I can't imagine doing this again, but I have been feeling under the weather too. I don't know.

Definitely don't give up. On the idea of hatching or on the current hatch. There may be a couple more late hatchers just waiting. And this time of year is especially difficult to hatch due to the high humidity of summer in NY, especially w all the rain we've been having lately. Don't get down on a less than stellar hatch this time. It can take a bit to get the hang of hatching. Maybe put together what uv learned & plan for the spring of 2016. If u can upgrade ur equipment, it probably will help. If u want to try again this year, I'm sure I'm one of several on this thread who can support u with fertile eggs. However, I'd recommend doing ur research & planning for spring. Just one humble opinion. We're all here for u whatever ur plan. :)

Thank you! I'm up to 9 hatched, and of course they are active now, when I want to sleep. I haven't given up on this hatch. I just think future hatches would require a broody. Incubating is for the birds. Ha.
I had grand plans of keeping track of each chick. They're hatching too quickly for me to even figure out who's who.
I'm learning a lot. A LOT! I have the temp and humidity fluctuations figured out. 45 started, 38 to lockdown, 9 hatched, 10+ pipping and/or zipping. The poorest outcome so far has been the Brahmas and the Welsummers. Of 7 Brahmas I have 2 that seem like they'll hatch. Of 6 Welsummers, 0 of 5 that made it to lockdown have pipped or wiggled.
I'm feeling better. Tired. But better. Thank you!

Candled duck eggs under broody hens. So far three out of five I think. Two def have life so there is hope. Took two EE chicks from Big Delores today. She's on duck eggs and has about a week to go.

Found a dead chick in the C. Rocks run. Didn't notice it yesterday when the hen was out. This particular hen is sitting on a duck egg too. Nice movement in the egg. She'd broken one egg and the others were no good. Except for this dead chick that I'd not noticed had hatched.

I've been trying to hatch Dels under the broodies but with no luck. I don't understand why they're not viable. Shells seem soft too even though I've given them extra oyster shell. It is a puzzle. I may try the incubator but not till things here turn round.

@tao chick
Oh, I'm so happy to read uv had a bunch hatch & more zipping & pipping! Yay! I try to keep myself busy when they're hatching, bc otherwise I'm glued to the windows of the bator, worrying & wondering if I should help them. Yeah, stress & anxiety but they're so freakin cute when they dry & fluff out... And it just may happen that u forget about the stress & want to do it again. Just sayin. Congrats!!! :D great job! Pics when available, please :)

That is 15. I just added 3 more.
Any idea why a BCM would hatch with a yellow pink beak? It's much lighter than the others too.It came from a dark brown egg.

I don't know BCMs very well, but my guess is that the chick's father could have been lighter. Or the beak may darken as the chick grows. Maybe someone w more Marans experience knows.
