NY chicken lover!!!!

did you see my post about noise?  Some breeds are worse crowers than others. Bantam Roosters are the worst, IMHO.

I keep about 7 + roosters and they're not that noisy. During the day it can be pretty quite.

This guy is super quiet most of the time. From 6:20 to 6:45 this morning he was doing what cocks do. Thank you for your consistent help. I appreciate it.

I've been socializing with the chicks a bunch today. My daughter named the 2 Welsummers. Barbie and Ken. :)

I wish these guys didn't start til then. Some of mine start at 4 am. Not quite as bad as you'd expect though. Especially when you consider how many I have.

I don't know why people think sounds a chicken makes are so objectionable. No one complains about lawn mowers or chain saws which are really noisy...I like Boskelli's suggestion of the yappy dogs. Perhaps the neighbor needs one of those white noise things.
Welcome to the newbs...I hope you enjoy contracting chicken math

yes I have 1 box fan in the window to draw humid air out and it does help to pull air in through the other windows and keep it cooler. Unfortunately, the way my yard is there is no where else to put a coop in the yard so it is in the back of the garage and that area gets sun almost all day. :(

Just checking in. I'm very busy right now trying to get everything ready for the end of summer. Crazy time for me. My DS's birthday is Tuesday and DH's is on Sunday so getting everything ready for their parties on Saturday. Trying to finish getting the last minute things for school together...and then I am trying to get everything set up at home so that I don't have to worry when I am working at the State Fair...then as soon as that is over school starts...Then it is DD's birthday the next week. End of summer is one of the busiest time of year for me..

As for my feathered family, they are doing well. They have been getting lots of frozen/cold treats. I gave them some frozen yogurt with some fruit cut up and they have had some watermelon too. The I had to give the turkeys their own half of watermelon cause they were chasing the chickens away. Even the ducks checked it out. The 8 baby ducks that I have are doing good. The broody hen that I gave the duck eggs to ate one of the eggs so I kicked her back into the run and put the eggs in the incubator and the 2 hatched out yesterday, 2 more blue and white ducklings! I did a head count and realized that most of my FL flock will be 3 next year so I decided to set one more bator full of LF eggs. Will be looking for some different breeds come spring.

The 4 that I hatched and the 4 that Rancher hatched for me..(I should have taken the picture after I cleaned the brooder) Going to be moving them to the next size bigger this weekend. THANKS AGAIN RANCHER!!!

My 2 new ones that hatched yesterday.

Aww! I love duckies! Next year maybe. I understand being busy right now, but wow you have a lot on your plate. I hope you get some relaxation time too.

So since I rehomed my ISA browns to my friend due to noise/neighbor problems, I really don't have any laying hens or good laying breeds. I have a cochin and 2 silkies. I've been doing some research on quiet breeds that lay well, even though it seems quietness is more of a individual chicken thing. I've come across barnevelders, buckeyes, delawares and of course orpingtons. Do any of you have experience with these breeds? I just want a docile chicken that's not too huge and noisy. Any advice is appreciated! Thanks all!

Well - although I love my Delawares, they are quite assertive and loud, Barnies have been great, consistent layers & quiet, no experience woth Orpys' but I'm told they are quiet and docile. Hows' the 'move the coop' thing going?

Got a scare - breeder hen decided to roost in parts unknown last night .... was out with flashlight and not a sign of her - which was good hiding as she is white with black spangles ..... Bright White .... Anyhow - she was out and about this morning and I fed her friends inside a dog crate to catch her since she knew I was out for her !!!! ha ha SO - now she is in the big snap lock coop and I am in search of Kennel/Run material - I do have good bird netting for the top. Sheesh .... I was building up a nice show quality breeder flock - and BAM - my bestest hen decides she thinks the current coop is too cramped. And with a great horned owl about .... I was so fussy last night - hardly slept. So please excuse the clutter about - 4-5 days in 89 to 90 degrees - and I am just doing the bare minimum outside ... the yard clean up can wait for cooler days. ABOVE are the new pair ... BELOW is the one with wanderlust when she was younger !!! BAD HEN !!!
Ugh. I'm sorry to read of ur scare. I've had a couple of my spotted chickens try to roost in a tree this summer. It was usually after I changed how they were housed or things were moved around. When I found them roosting out there, I pulled them down and trimmed the primaries on 1 wing each. So far it has kept the tree-roosting in check.

So far I have not moved the coop. I really don't see a reason to considering there is no noise unless I'm out there...even then not loud. Its stationary and we dug about 4 inches into the ground and 4x4s make up the base so I think it would be really difficult to move it...not quite sure how to move it even with PVCs since the the coop doesn't sit right on top of the ground but is screwed into the 4x4s.

Barnies seem like a good choice, buckeyes seem interesting too.
