NY chicken lover!!!!

Does feed consumption increase before laying starts? The monsters are eating twice what they were a week ago, and noisy oh my so noisy!!! The boys (mostly Spitz the silver one) are starting to follow the RIR girls very closely. Am I getting excited for no reason or are they getting close?

I wanted to drop in catch up and say hello. I've been so busy with work, putting up produce from the garden, and the girls have homework that came with their school letters for the first day back. We've had a fox come visiting and only one guinea is left. We bought traps and managed to catch feral cats instead. Now we need to get them fixed before releasing them. We also are replacing flooring in the dining room. DH sawed boards in the house one night this week and I ended up having to rewash my dishes and everything else in the kitchen area.

Do any of you buy egg cartons at a reasonable price? They are 49c at Tractor Supply- no thanks.

I just let all my egg customers know I'd appreciate the cartons back and word got around and all my coworkers now leave their cartons on my desk. You might be able to let your coworkers know you'd like them and I bet they'd be happy to give them to you.

Good morning. I have been integrating all the chickens. I have 3 pullets close to laying (22 weeks) so I've been keeping them cooped up slightly longer in the morning. The two 10-week old pullets are not used to being cooped up. The babies are 4 weeks old now. I'm down to 13, of which I believe 7 are cockerels, maybe as many as 9. We will keep at least 1 of the cockerels. Watching them all in the coop has been interesting. The babies have a secure spot away from the bigger ones, but other than that they can mingle.
Have a good day, all.

So I called this guy back. Nice guy, just moved to the area and has some land. He thought a few chickens might be good pets for his kids. He just doesn't know much about chickens yet. I tried to encourage him to research a bit, get setup for them and then maybe purchase some baby chicks in the spring. I was talking to my sister about it. She's a horse person who frequently runs into people who think all ponies are baby horses that haven't grown up yet. Now I'm trying to figure out what kind of grossly incorrect assumptions I've made about subjects which I have limited exposure to. I'm sure I'm guilty & just don't know any better.

I seem to remember a thread here on BYC somewhere about stupid things people have said about chickens....

Searching for inexpensive hatching eggs to set by 9/21. Why? Morehens Disease. Hatching addiction. Also searching for a good incubator. I'd use the one I borrowed as a hatcher, I think. I'm a planner, so I think hatching eggs allows me some sense of control over my plans. Also, I think hatching somehow makes me feel more protected from AI and other diseases. I am pretty protected from predators, so an illness that could take out my flock scares me.

Sorry for rambling. Not many people understand my crazy.
