NY chicken lover!!!!

Off topic, the mailman brought our mail and I asked him if he brought me a check. He said, "no, but your not going to like what I'm bringing you". I looked and our water bill was get this, 1200.00!!! They said we went from using our regular 10k gallons to over 78 THOUSAND gallons in two months time!

We don't drink the water, we don't use it for cooking. We use it for showers, dishwasher, clothes washer and the toilet. So, we're looking at leaks and go to the board on Tuesday. They said if we tell them there's a leak, we'll have it reduced. I can't even believe it and with Christmas coming.

Well, at least we have our health and hopefully everything will work out. To add to everything. A female sheriff came behind me at walmart. I parked near the door because my husband was lugging 5 gallon water jugs. She popped up to let me know I was in a fire lane and to get out. At least she was kind and didn't give me a ticket but I think at the end of this day, I'm ready to crawl into bed in a fetal position and cry Uncle. Hahahaha

I don't usually put pertroleum jelly on the girls - their combs are usually small enough and close enough to their heads that I'm not so concerned, unless they're leghorns. I worry about my roosters. This year I'll be especially after my buff orp/leghorn cross as he has quite the comb on him. But if your ventilation is good enough in your coop I wouldn't worry about it tonight, I don't think it's going to be cold enough for long enough to worry much.

We have two of the windows open about maybe 2". One on each side. We do have some ventilation on the top from front and back but I'm not quite sure if it's good ventilation up there yet. So far they seem to be fine. I'm crossing my fingers I don't kill these girls over winter.

I have a bit of a debbie downer sort of attitude after today. Hahaha

Yeah, that water bill thing is horrible Hope you get it sorted out!

I doubt you'll kill them, you seem like a good chicken keeper They are hardy little things too - it's amazing what they can stand up to. Last winter was absolutely horrible and even my oldest girls came through it fine.

My cousin in Auburn took a pic of a double rainbow yesterday but we didn't personally see it. Wish we had though. It looks so beautiful!

I've been busy lately with work and kids. I had a job interview last week and should hear back this week. My hours at my current job are kicking my butt. Today is my sister in law's baby shower. I made a few batches of cookies. Tomorrow is the chicken show at the state fair grounds, but the girls have soccer games on sundays.

In between I'm working on coop cleaning and I need to till the garden so I can plant my garlic. I have grown it the past few years with decent luck. I only grow enough for my pickles and some cooking.

It's my first winter with chickens, so I'm feeling really anxious about it all too!

Is anyone using the petroleum jelly on their girls tonight so they don't get frost bite? I know they said it may snow but weather.com looks like it won't be below temps. I'm guessing we have a bit more time before this happens right?

You can also use Bag Baum but a bit more expensive than jelly? I suppose I could get it at the dollar store. I've done it in the th past but it's not much help IMO. The key is to keep the humidity low so there isn't enough moisture. Too it's an everynight job in the winter. I wear a plastic glove sometimes but usually get it on myself anhow. i gfigure it's good for my hands so what the heack?
