NY chicken lover!!!!

EE's hybrids? Perhaps I have a misunderstanding of "hybrid".

Waterers in the run? I use five gallon buckets with heaters but if they are not blocked from the wind they will freeze. Since I cover my runs they're okay. I don't keep water in the coops. I still prefer the black tubs. Much easier to just give them fresh water each day. those buckets still get green in them.

I am still working on getting things done up before the snow. I learned something the hard way. Make your run doors wide enough to fit a wheelbarrow through. Today I tossed the coop cleanings into the run so the birds can rework the shavings. Sometimes I just dig up what is in the run to put in my garden. By spring it should be fine.

Delawares? I love my Dels. They are the easiest to deal with and good layers. Though I do have to chase them out of the nest boxes when they're young. They want to hide in there at night. Of late I've been putting an empty milk jug in the boxes at night.

Lavender Amers? I had a Lavender Amer roo from PA, but traded him out for a Lavender Auraucana. He has not whiskers but he's okay. Not friendly. I do have some lavender hens but they're not pure as their mothers were EE's. I have a large black Roo from the cross. He does show some red from one of the EE hens. I just keep a mix of EE's, Amers and Aruacana for gene depth and egg color. I also have some Olive eggers.

I heard kraft was selling/closing some plants and that they're expanding the lowville plant. My brother in law works at lowville. Hood has done the same sort of thing but so far the Vernon plant is still running. Who knows what the future will bring? Some times I really dislike big business.
I'm not sure it's big business as much as NYS. Folks of course keep voting in the wrong people. Taxes are too high. It can be tough to be frugal but it can help. We never hung out with the Joneses so we never had to keep up with them.

I remember dumpster diving at the drugs stores I delivered to. One year we had an artificial tree I salvaged from the then Carl's drug store. It was a tough year. Poor tree probably had four rows of branches.

Those were not the good ol' days for sure.

I also buy presents during the year so as not to get hit hard at Christmas.

Now I don't even remember what we did for Christmas last year. I do know we just buy for the grandkids. Not the adults.

I asked my GD what she wanted for her birthday and she quickly said "not a book".

We encourage them to read and have a membership to Barnes and Nobles. Plus I get 20% off coupons now and then. At Christmas time I stock up on Starbucks coffee. I still have two bags of decaf from last year.

I also buy books at the public library sale shelf. $1 a book is not bad. Though not for gifts.

I too have a "bachelor pad" for roosters, and generally they get along together just fine; I think there's 16 in there now. I took some out & added younger ones that were big enough to stand up for themselves. After a few days of the newbies being scared, they're all peaceful. A few did try to escape & that's with a covered run. I also separated 3 bantam / bantam crosses, but they all successfully flew/climbed the fence to the top where there was a small gap & rejoined the hens. At least they're small & once I get the fence fixed, I'll try again.
Last week, I chose 15 more to go to "freezer camp", but I still have "too many" roosters, at 22 total! Just can't decide on who else goes. Some are def. keepers, as they're from a different bloodline, so can be used next year for breeding.

Winterizing coming along nicely, though the garden has lots more to be done before winter arrives.

Ok, been gone a while. Working and just got two kittens from a lady that had about fifty. Her mother passed away abd she got stuck with a bunch of pregnant queens and ferals and what a mess. I was told they were ten weeks, they seemed about that I guess. Worms galore and fleas the size of cockroaches. Feed them DE and pumpkin. I think it us working, I hope it is. Got a nice gash on the wrist/palm area as a result of the flea bath. Such a headache...
Anyway, been letting my flock out and they love it now. Highly supervised since its a temp run. I'm standing here freezing as we speak watching them.
But I'm confused. I thought Abigail was a partridge rocks... but her feathers are striped like a turkey or something. Not laced. I can't recall if this is penciled or not. She has the beauty black and brown color with the Orange tan neck feathers. So, what is she?

Just reread that post... I really am cold, auto correct and I didn't notice.
The girls are dancing with each other... I'm trying to keep track of who wins so I can figure out their order. So cute when their little neck feathers fluff up and they get all tough... but it reminds be of high school :/

Will you be coming to the annual NY Chickenstock in spring? You'll have lots of opportunity to set up sales with people here and then pick up at chickenstock if you are. For color you can't go wrong with easter eggers - both they and the eggs they lay can be tons of different colors. Then you have olive eggers, an offshoot of EEs that lay eggs in shades of olive. There's also Welsummers for a nice terracotta colored egg and marans for a deep chocolate colored egg. And if you want a bird that's as black as black can be, I will probably have ayam cemani hatching eggs, cull chicks, and maybe even some breeder quality chicks depending on how my hatches go.
is a date set for chickenstock yet?

Sonew is hosting this year in Onchiota, and I don't think she's yet set a date, but it's usually in May.

@2Fast2Curious if you're still interested in maybe getting some cemanis at Chickenstock send me a pm :)
