NY chicken lover!!!!

I have one who I think hasn't laid in at least a week. She started way later than the other three and has been my least consistent. I picked her up once and she didn't lay for days, the jerk! Also my least favorite personality. .. and the largest. Will be the first to be replaced, I guess.

Congrats! And yeah, I think I've decided to join the NYD hatch a long, lol. Technically I won't have hatched any more this year

But that's it until spring!
Thats the spirit ! Not too far away

Thanks all who replied to my post. Unfortunately the little guy or gal did not make it. But I think it was for the best. It did perk up under heat and I gave it sugar water. But it was never able to stand. It's leg looked a little messed up, not quite in the right position but it was not splayed. I think it was from being in that position in the box for so long. I did try to wash off some of the grow gel. That seemed to help the mobility of the leg some but the chick never could stand up and got weaker as the day progressed, then I noticed very labored breathing and then it was gone.
I have another one that is partially covered in the grow gel that is standing upon arrival and seemed ok. It eats and drinks. I have it in with the others and have kept a close eye on it but I have my doubts. It seems weaker then the others and now is closing its eyes a lot. I won't bathe this one but I wonder if it has lost its ability to maintain heat loss with the grow gel matting some of its feathers.

Congrats on your blue egg by the way.

May be hiding them ..

:cd Chicky see Chickie Do , Chickie lay a egg in that nest too :cd
chickie better net hatch any out, it's not a good time for babies. I did turn all bedding this morning and cleaned all boxes and did not find any eggs so I think I'm safe. They are just being odd because of the weather I think. Heck 42° and no snow on December 10th, come on now this is not normal. We have had 0 snow yet.

Question....I have someone that is interested in some of my processed roosters. They want to pay for them. What would be a fair price for them. They aren't meat birds, just young dual birds, about 3-4 pounds each. I was just going to give her some, but she said that she wanted to pay for them so I want to tell her a reasonable fair price. I thought that I would ask you peeps for advice first.

Can you barter? Otherwise I have no clue how much, sorry!

Dad always had RIR, a few would brood, he also had a japanese black bantam, his best broody. She would hatch out most of his reds, and rear them fiercely, the reds didn't mess with that mamma. At least once a yr she would disappear out in the woods and show up weeks later with a clutch of her own, did that for yrs until she disappeared...
No snow? Your not wishing for it are you? I'd love some and some cold for deer hunting, but I can sure live without it

This warm weather has given me the opportunity to move the small coop/run. They have one 14x50 new garden section cleared and well fertilized. While moving everything they got to freerange and immediately attacked the newer small bed of kale, both beds are still growing. Kale is awesome stuff, froze solid every night, springs back up after the sun comes out and actually grows.

And working new ground.

yes I am the rotten person who is wishing for snow. The hunter we get our deer from has had crap luck and is blaming it on no snow. I want meat for the freezer .

Congrats on the blue egg! I've got some pullets or hens laying a bluish/green egg, but most are green, khaki - so many shades it's wonderful!
Of course, the camera doesn't do it justice, despite trying many different settings.

Well, I never thought I'd be hatching chicks during the winter, but it looks like I may be.
A friend requested pullets, so they'd be laying in the spring or early summer.
So, I ordered some "assorted laying hen" chicks from a hatchery the end of September,
so I wouldn't have to raise out 2x a many to accommodate for the inevitable roosters.
But, they ended up sending me red & black broilers!

Not what I or they wanted!
Most look to be females, but they have a huge appetite, growing way too fast for being
any a regular laying hen breed. They hatched Sept 23rd & are at least 3/4 the size of
the partridge chantecler hen who's raised them.

I'd join the New Year's Day Hatch-a-long, but too many eating egg customers this week!
One week more isn't going to delay it much longer, anyways. And hopefully by the time
they chicks are hatched or a few weeks old, the meat chickens can be processed.
Though, not looking forward to processing during the middle of winter, especially since the
local processor doesn't do it after November!
Always an adventure.
