NY chicken lover!!!!

I've been giving him little bits of torn up kale when I give him his lunch ( grower feed), and he eats that. I hear ppl say they give their chickens kitchen scraps, like vegetable peels and rinds. I suppose those need to be cooked also.

Vegetables don't need to be cooked. With meat the problem with raw would be the risk of things like salmonella and e. coli, and maybe even parasites. Cooking kills that. With veggies there really isn't that concern. This time of year mine like it when I hang up a head of cabbage or lettuce for them to go after. Gives them something to do :) Mine also love bananas. They're not as crazy about apples. We have apple trees out back that we really don't do anything with so they drop a ton of apples and for the most part the birds don't touch them.

Other things they like are pumpkins, cucumbers, tomatoes, and any kind of bread.

Great, thanks! I shall experiment to see what scraps he'll eat. Feed is expensive. If I can replace at least one of his meals with something I don't have to buy, that's be great. How many times per day do u guys feed your chickens? Two? Three?

I do free choice, meaning that I leave it out for them all day :)

Just be careful - you don't want to feed him too many treats. They need certain things nutritionally that they get from the feed we feed them and if they get too many treats they won't get that and it can cause problems. It is possible however to make a feed yourself that covers all they need as long as you are careful to include the right nutrition.

Boy did I ever have a time of it getting the new nesting boxes installed today. Even now they aren't fully installed. My good decking screws have gone missing - I suspect that when we had some renovation done the workers 'borrowed' them to use. So I found some other screws laying around, square bit metal ones, so I thought I'd try those.

They were horrible. Two of them stripped and are lodged in the nesting boxes until I can get out there with pliers to remove them. Several others, the heads just broke right off when I was tightening them. And when I finally got them in and took the support out I was using to hold up the nesting boxes, they just fell right out of the darn wood and the nesting boxes came crashing down! I finally stole one good screw from some old roosts that I was planning to move anyway and used that to hold one end up. It's still sitting in the support until I can get more decent screws into it to make sure it doesn't fall off the darn wall again when a hen is using them.

Sorry to hear about your dilemma, Pyxis. I hate when I'm ready to use something that I know is supposed to be there, and find its no longer there. Such a time waster.

So does anyone know about buckeye and Dominique chickens? Someone on Craigslist has some. I want quiet chickens that lay reasonably well and will get along with my rabbits and other chicken. And won't fly over my four foot fence
