NY chicken lover!!!!

Rancher, I've got Amazon Prime and I love it. I'm a student, so I got my first six months free and now pay half price for it. It's $99 a year regularly, which is well worth it if you order enough because the free 2 day shipping pays for itself very quickly. You also get a lot of shows free for streaming. X Files is one, I know, because I've been binging it. And you also get to borrow a book from Amazon (there are certain ones that are allowed for this) for your kindle once a month for free. I believe there are other perks too but those are the ones I use the most.

Ohh I can't wait for the new season of Grimm to start. Me, too. One of my favorite shows.

Anyone here got Amazon Prime? I was thinking about getting it for my tablet but they take all your information before telling you how much it cost. It's about $100 a year and yo get charged all at once. It has a pretty decent selection of movies and TV shows. I have a Roku and watch it on the TV most of the time, but got some headphones and watch on my tablet once in a while too. Lots of free music and you get a better price and free shipping if you order things. You get it in two days which is wonderful if you need some little thing you can't find locally. I like it.

Been picking out veggies for the garden and have the map done. I'm on the homestead thread if anyone has advice on what's good to grow. I'm into storage now. What's good for storing. Anyone here do herbs? Dried? I could do frozen but the freezer is pretty much full. I do can and ate a small jar of applesauce with some Cranberry jelling in it. A few years ago I grew dill and dried it in the microwave. Came out great and I still have a lot left that tastes fresh. Use it in soups, stews, on fish, deviled eggs, lots of stuff. I liked the microwave method because you lay them on paper towels, figure out how many seconds for the herb and process them all at once. Given the price of herbs and spices you can save a lot of money.

As far as the respiratory stuff, I have had the same issues and at one time was taking all sorts of prescriptions. I ditched them all and take generic guafenesin (same thing as mucinex and about 1/3 the price) with phenylephrine, sold as Chest and Sinus Congestion Relief PE. Taken at bedtime it keeps you from getting stuffed up coughing all night when you want to sleep. My doctor told me to try taking it twice a day and it worked wonders.

Rancher, I have Amazon Prime, mostly for the free two day shipping on most things, but I do use it sometimes for movies or tv shows. I think it cost $75... or $90.. to renew this year. Sorry, things like that seem to slip out of my mind so quickly these days. I get more use out of Netflix and pay like $15/month...
I just placed a (way too large) seed order through Fruition Seeds. They are a bit expensive, but they are local (Ontario County), and produce all organic seed, so I am happy to pay a bit more. I had really great luck with their seed last year. They are still fairly new, so selection isn't huge, but growing in leaps and bounds!

Netti pot- if you can use it, try it. It makes a HUGE difference. I'm easily freaked out by things put into noses, but it's totally painless and easy if you have the technique right. The trick is to open your mouth an inch or two so that the salt water doesn't come into your mouth. My husband, who has had a lifetime of sinus issues, swears by it.

Holy moly, how did I not know about the free book once a month part? Woohooooooo! Thanks Pyxis!

I'm sure I won't need eggs but I can always use manure. What kind of manure?  Even in winter manure can sit. Farming doesn't quit just cuz the snows falling, but I know you know that.
horse manure. As much as you think you need. I have access to old, new and in between. For transporting it I could bag it in the green and white pine shavings bags. That's what we use for the horses.

You're welcome! Just look for a little prime symbol next to a book while you're browsing. If you see that, you can borrow it for free! If you don't know about Kindle First, check that out too, you get one book free a month before it's been released. There are a selection of six books and you pick one from those.

EE hatching eggs you say?

Sorry folks if I came off whatever the emotion is. I appreciate everyone's concern and prayers. DW is sick too and quite frankly it's been hard. We haven't been anywhere in weeks. Yesterday was the first time I'd been to a store so my trip to get the feed was a big deal. :D     I'm an outdoors person and have been known to go out in the middle of the night and just sit admiring the falling snow.  She watches the same junk on TV and because she's sick I let her have control. Cooking shows, remodeling shows, old movies, aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

I might not be feeling so bad if i'd gotten my chores done but I didn't. Believe it or not it easier to pull that wagon through when the ground if frozen. It's muddy and that makes walking difficult. The bottom of my bathrobe is muddy too.

I stapled an old navy blanket over the Coop with the three daisies. It's going to be cold. I haven't done the plastic yet either. I like the plastic up so I can spread the hay in the run. It's smells nice and looks good too. I hate chickens with wet feet.

I do know that now is not a good time for rehoming chickens and I'm not a patient man. Of course it's not a good time to grow out chicks too. The Dels are part of Kathinmo line and I'd lost two this past spring so was working to replace them.  You can see the difference in the three hens.

Every year I give away chicks and no one should be buying EE hatching eggs without contacting me first. I've a new hen laying that lays a very dark Olive color. You know the gross green.

DD and hers have moved out but there is still stuff to be got. She comes and takes a little each time. It was not a good deal so things are stressed. Sometimes I think parents get the blame for things that are not their fault. I didn't tell her to marry the jerk.  Too she had free tuition to nursing school through DW and blew it!  Some kids just don't appreciate what they've been given.

Sorry for that.

Anyhow come spring I'll feel better I'm sure. Spring is always a new beginning to me.

Yes Aria, chickens are important to me. They keep me active. I don't want to be one of those old folks who sits and watches time pass waiting for the Grim reapers. Ohh I can't wait for the new season of Grimm to start.

TTFN,

I know its fround upon but broke down in put heat lamps in the coops. I used to have one coop with them all, but I built another much bigger one right before Christmas and I fear the six chickens and the turkey just have to much space in there to keep warm. Same with the original coop with only the five adults and four youngin left there.

Its a personal decision..you have to decide what you think is best for your flock ...
Im curious why did you split them this time of year ?
I put my 2 flocks together ...for heat in the winter ( young ones & old ones )
