NY chicken lover!!!!

I will be driving from Middlesex, so I can pick you up. I will have a truck, not expecting to take too much so should have room for some birds or whatever.

I was kind of thinking more along the lines of a middle man, lol. I won't be able to attend. Aside from the distance, it is also smack in the middle of Little League season and we've got all four playing this year.

That sounds pretty, I might be depending on how my chicken situation works itself out

And yes, a single comb is a fault. They should have walnut combs.

Sweetpea - Any Pictures ?

I'll see about getting some pictures of the mix hen tomorrow. She has lacing (white on black I think....she is more black than the sebright hen). Smooth feathers, but she has the top knot, feathered feet, the extra toe, and the blue ears of the silkie. She's bigger than a sebright, but smaller than the silkie. She's actually kind of neat, lol.

We didn't keep the cockerels from that hatch, but they stayed long enough to feather out and their feathers had more white lacing. They were otherwise very similar to the pullet.

This year, I'd like to see what hatches when I pair the silkie rooster back over the mix hen. I assume the feathering will no longer be smooth, but I'm curious how the genetics will be influenced.

So, Sickie Chick update...her foot has not changed at all and her other foot is now slightly swollen. I read that this can indicate a Vit B deficiency, but I don't understand how that could be the case for her and not the other birds eating the same feed. She has actually put some decent weight on and does not show any other issues. She's not desperately trying to sneak back to the bantam side of the coop and she's holding her own with the other big birds.

Hubby says he thinks it may just be best to cull her. He said he wouldn't want to eat any eggs she may lay and if her foot doesn't get better, he sees no reason to keep her around. So we'll see.

Roscoe rat is still causing havoc. Holes being the main issue. I'm starting to wonder if this thing is actually burrowed underground near the coop, instead of in the walls, as I thought before.

The other night, our cat accompanied me out when I went to check on things. He grew real focused on the outside wall for a minute or so (the same wall where all the digging occurs) but then he started to focus on the dirt ground a couple of feet away.

Tomorrow, during the warm weather, I'm going to drag our hose out there and shove it down one of the holes and see if I can flood him out.

And if that doesn't work, I'm afraid I may have no choice but to use poison and hope it dies in its burrow. Big risk if it comes out and dies in the yard where our dogs or cats could get it.

So today was my first bloody pullet today. Somehow her wattle got ripped just the tiniest bit. Oh my word talk about a lot of blood!!!! Poor baby went from white to red. A tepid cleaning with some water then a glop of triple antibiotic ointment and she was fine. She looks so yucky though. I wish it was warmer I would clean her chest up.

Woo-hoo! !! I picked Bob up tonight! !! He's a lavender orpington and oh is he big... Standing next to my spitzhauben boys he almost doubles their size. He's a sweet boy though. Tonight he is in isolation as a precaution for morning. I don't want tiny Spitz or Golden Boy kicking his butt, he's still a baby. I will get pics tomorrow of him playing with everyone.

If anyone will have guinea keets or hatching eggs this spring I would be interested in getting some.

I found heated dog bowls at walmart for 19.97 last week and thought they were a good buy. I also buckled and got my first smart phone, now to figure it out.

possibly "Old Barn Hallow " on binghamton south side? I looked up red barn hallow and nothin. Old however was a great looking farmers market.

You could give her a bath ..and let her spend the night inside ..
she would be dry & you could let her out the next day ..
Watch out for pecking ...that red is a bullseye for other chickens
