NY chicken lover!!!!

Hello! We must be neighbors. I live outside Van Etten headed towards Odessa. I just ordered my first ever chicks today. 3 easter eggers, 3 Partridge Rocks, 3 Anconas, 3 leghorns. Glad there's somebody local here. I am brand new to this. We just bought a little farm last fall. We have a coop but need to get supplies.

Welcome to BYC and to this thread! I'm just the other side of Odessa by Watkins. Sounds like a fun group of chicks you've ordered. Have fun w them!

Is that for everyone ? I will wait till I have a broody though ..
I would buy them from you too...
Do you have any dark brown eggs ?
are the M Daises blue layers ? Id like more blue eggs
I have your number taped to the wall for some reason. I don't know why I stuck it there.

anyhow Yes of course.

The Daisies lay a brown egg.

My marans aren't laying so I've turned on the light. I have just the one rooster now. I'm hoping he does his business soon as I'd like to hatch some Marans. I have a pullet from last hatch that was the only one to hatch and I had to help her out.

In the Marans coop are an EE and OE. The OE laid an egg yesterday but it wasn't fertile.

While Big Delores is in with an EE roo and she is laying I haven't noticed her eggs fertile. She lays a brown egg. I did notice the EE roo on a Lavender EE hen this morning so maybe she'll start laying.

I find that when they're out and I'm out with them they seem more content.

Today was a great day. I sat on the porch in my bathrobe and coat reading and soaking in the sun. I'm totally a sun person and suffer from Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that's related to changes in seasons — SAD begins and ends at about the same times every year . in the winter. I don't get depressed so much as just yuk and unmotivated. Even if it's cold and the sun is shining you might find me out there.

I recommend keeping seating clear for sitting out with the birds in the winter. I like to sit and drink my coffee. The Daisies come running when I'm out. They think I have corn.

I've never been diagnosed rancher, but I have the same problem in the winter. So does an aunt of mine in London. She goes traveling then, finding a warm sunny destination. I just lag around the house, nothing gets done, and the husband gets upset at my laziness. Oh well

The lack of natural vitamin D from the sun is what causes SAD in winter. I have found the best cure for it is a cup of hot coffee and a nice long visit to the coop. They can cure even the worst case of SAD.

Sorry to disagree with you on both counts. I take vitamin D and it doesn't help. Too I have five coops and if a visit to the coop helped I'd be five times better.

Too at this time of year they need a thorough cleaning. I just spruced them up a bit, take out the largest piles under the roosts and adding more shavings.

What does help is talking to you folks here.

FYI Country Max is having a sale on shavings. $3.99 time to stock up. 13th & 14th. I wish they sold Nobles but Nobles is not more I think.

I just get lethargic and unmotivated. I also think the cold doesn't help. I guess I'm reptilian because the warmth of the sun is a big help.

Devona you don't need to be diagnosed, you know how you feel. Besides I told my doc and I could swear I heard him say "take two chicks and call me in the morning".

What can the medical community do about it, but prescribe another pill. Lord have mercy, I can barely fit the pills I take now in the little day boxes.

Did I tell you about the kid who was caught by his teacher eating candy?

The teacher says what are you eating?

The kid says smart pills.

The teacher says give me some.

The kid says they're all gone.

The teacher says bring me some tomorrow.

The next day he brought in some Rabbit poop and gave it to the teacher.

She says this taste like rabbit poop.

The kid says see you're getting smarter already.

Question for you guys- at what age do cockerels mature to where I'll get fertilized eggs? I've read about 6 months for some but way earlier for others. Specifically I'll be having a silkie rooster hopefully from the eggs in my incubator! Also thinking about having a EE or OE rooster

Whenever they start crowing and doing the 'deed'. 12-20 weeks usually. Just check the eggs for the 'bullseye'.
