We've had some young one's, 16, 48. My other gramma recently also,69 pancreatic. She swore up and down cancer today caused by microwaves, threw theirs out and bought a toaster oven. Said "microwaves cook food with radiation then we EAT it!" I thought it funny at the time.
I think it's a combination of about everything, over medication, chemicals, food. We need to take better care of ourselves.
There will be a cure soon I'm sure, how soon IDK.
Twenty yrs ago when I was riding a bus to school carrying a walkman and a dozen cassette tapes they said a cure was coming soon. Now I'm typing on a little computer phone that's smaller than a cassette tape, I paid $25 for that works faster than our new laptop and I can watch movies on and had hundreds of songs downloaded I can listen to, and takes great pictures, still no cure...Maybe tomorrow someone will have a lightbulb turn on and it'll be there...

That was a rant? That's ok. So because of all this stuff I was reading about gmo food, I broke down and ordered organic layer feed from scratch and peck. I had bought my first ever bag of feed from them when I first got Chick, but realized it was really expensive, when I heard how much other people on here pay for their feed. But I don't have a feed store close by me anyway, and I only got the other feed when I visited my cousin over an hour away from me, or when she came to visit. So I decided if we are what we eat, and our chickens are what they eat, then I'd better buy them organic feed. Mind you since I only have a few, it's affordable right now. If I had more chickens, then I might've been singing a different tune.

Do you keep a scrap pile from your left over food for them? That might buffer the cost a bit. My daughter is a vegan, so we always have about a plate of carrot peels, grapes, seeds, berries, stems etc...I also throw them the beyond eating apples and pears etc...They love that stuff.

I'm sorry for your troubles Rancher. Cancer sucks. I lost my dad to a rare form of cancer 6 months ago. It was an awful time for my family, not to mention, my dad. I now understand the old term "wasting disease". Many people, from the very young, to the old,seem to be getting this disease.

Just a thought. It may not be feasible but here goes.

I know the big reason most of us in this thread raise and grow our own food is for health. Well I also know that this thread breaks down to several areas of NY. So maybe we break down into groups close enough together that we can start a food exchange in each area.

On the days one has no eggs another shares. In garden season we swap to get to our goals per household. If one ends up with a boat load of peppers all at once share and so on. Never cut your household short but we could try and get something going in each area. Not just with us BYC members but with the community. Less money going into big business and a good motivator for large farm once they start to see a loss to us small farms.

I'm not talking some huge thing of trying to take over America's food but something small . Get the goat family down the road involved to sell cheese, soap and such. The pig family on the other hill could do pork packs at slaughter time. The Harb gardener could put together packs of herbs for specific meals, like meatloaf , spaghetti, chicken noodle soup.

We all concentrate a little more on one thing instead of trying to "do it all ourselves " and it builds a new community.

Ok just a thought I'm done, but if any of you close to me are interested just let me know.

The prevalence of illness has struck a chord with all of us. I don't know if things has changed in recent years, like the last 20, or if I have just become a suspicious old lady, but I used to believe the USDA, other government regulatory offices and the medical folk were doing their best for the people. I don't anymore. When I know that other countries have discontinued microwaves and GMOs and treat illnesses in different ways, I have come to the conclusion that we are on our own to guard our health. So as natural as can be, and keep active are my goals. When you think about it, the chickens help with both of those.

Rancher & others who have family or friends with cancer, my heart goes out to you. We keep hearing of people who have cancer & at the animal shelter I heard someone say they've also lost cats & dogs to cancer. I too think it's a combination of food, all the chemicals, GMOs, etc.
My oldest brother (before I was born) had a very rare cancer & died at 3 years old. My mom heard someone in the hospital say "cancer is big business" during that time. So, my theory is that there are "cures" but they don't want them public knowledge until they can make them "profitable". It's sad when money is more important than someone's health.
I do know there is a man with cancer who changed his diet, lots of juicing & his numbers improved.

Got my first broody of the season, one of the young girls from last Valentines day. She tried going broody shortly after starting to lay last summer and broke her of that. I have been noticing feathers in one of the nest boxes the past few nights, but no chicken. Well last night she was in the box and her belly is naked. Silly girl. Put her in the coop bottom nest box with some golf balls. If she is willing to brood in a different location than the wall boxes, I will allow her to sit. AFTER this weekend's artic burst. Partridge Rock/Welsummer cross.

My deepest sympathy to all of you suffering from or helping someone deal with cancer or any other life threatening illness . I have been very lucky on the cancer side and not lost anyone ,yet knock on wood. However my family consists of a type 1 juvenile diabetic, a 100% mentally and physically disabled daughter 2 little ones with lead poison and one with only mental illness. So while I can't say I understand the pain of cancer I can feel the pain of not knowing what's next. My prayers go out to everyone and I hope soon we can work to make life healthier one family at a time. I 100% believe it's chemicals in out food doing it.
