NY chicken lover!!!!

Well, needless to say my youngest Rooster is in charge of flock security. Bob is the most aggressive animal I have ever owned. He treats me like I'm his queen but he charged my oldest son. He's normally a very nice boy but my son startled a hen and that made Bob angry real fast. Bob is also not intimidated by my psycho dog. Bob jumped on his head and taught him chicken doesn't get eaten raw.

My silver spitzhauben finally decided to grow into his attitude. He's still the most docile of the 3 boys but now he's at least the same size as my golden spitzhauben, who is flock leader. Still not any real aggressive behavior between them so I'm happy about that.

There is a large hay field across the road from us, so they seem drawn to it. Usually it is only a select few that wander over, but occasionally I will find the whole flock over there. We are on a back road, but there are some cars that drive way too fast past us. I have watched them not slow down as the chickens are in the middle of the road.

Yes, hatching eggs please.

How old are the chicks? Of course you are a few hours from me.
They are day old... but I actually just had someone pick them up. They never last long! I have boxes and can ship, if you're interested in a hatch in the near future.

Lost my 4 year old black Orp hen to vehicular slaughter. :,( She was in my first group of chickens. Was hoping she would go broody around Chickenstock time, she was an awesome broody. Going out to see if the ground is thawed enough for electronet. And going to rehome the other 3 worst offenders for road crossing to someone with a coop and run.

I'm so sorry about ur black orp hen. Why is it that when stuff happens it's always with our favorites? My favorite rooster busted out of his pen this week and got himself pretty beat up. When I found him, he was covered in mud, bloody face & one eye swollen shut. I'm so embarrassed I didn't see where he had loosened up the fencing that separates the groups. Ugh, poor guy.

It's ok. Maybe I can get some Orp eggs from you for Chickenstock.

I think I only have 2 hens and my roo left from when I first started 4 years ago. My roo has been beat up a couple times by younger roo's, but then they go away.

Hugs to y'all. It sounds like lots of busy spring happenings with wandering chickens, sometimes with sad endings, and chicks everywhere.

I moved my 9 7-wk old chicks to their own coop and run. I was going to use it for my Brabanter chickens but I also found worms in poop in the coop (the brooder was near the coop but separate so I won't treat the youngens unless needed) so I'm treating them first. I wondered what was up when they weren't laying well. Now I know and will go through a variety of treatments to get rid of the different creeps in the coop. I'll scrub the big brooder and get it ready for my 1-wk old chicks. There are chicks hatching as I write this. I have a large group of eggs due 4/24. I plan on scrubbing again and setting more eggs 4/30 so I'll have chicks for chickenstock.

what is it you plan on bringing to chicken stock? I don't have anything written down to buy from you. Hmm odd. I thought I did.

@Beer can do you have any pictures of your run with the netting you were telling me about? The more I think about it the more I'd like to do something like that but I'm having trouble visualizing.

I don't think I set anything in stone. I still haven't gotten the softball schedule, but I'm pretty sure we'll make it to chickenstock. Now my dad is having health issues so I have to get through that first too before committing.
My plan is to have olive eggers. My roo is a Wheaten Ameraucana and he has Welsummer and BCM hens that would throw olive egger chicks. Should, anyway. I haven't tested any of the genetic combos yet. He also has a CCL and a Black-Lavender split Ameraucana hen so that combo should be EE. And the other combos would be green egg layers. My SIL will likely have Welsummers available. We'll be running a test hatch soon.
Now that I think about it, I'm going to have to find a chicken vet to test my flock first. We've been a closed flock since the Brabanters came, but when they came I had concerns about their health. The whole flock spent time coughing but I didn't lose any birds and after a thorough coop cleaning and airing out the symptoms went away. I'd rather err on the side of caution and take one in for testing before I try to sell any chicks.... Oh bugger.... add that to the to do list.
