NY chicken lover!!!!

Cant believe the creep is still lurking..the police cant do anything ?
Could you put some kind of alarm system in your yard ? that blares loud sounds if disturbed ?

Funny thing is, we called 'em about the drug house twice or so next door - they had the whole police force out at 2am and hassled the bank that owns it. But this guy? They've talked to him once while he was on the prowl and gone, "well he said he didn't do it" and been content with that.

Alarm system's in the makings.
@2Fast2Curious , booby traps so you know when he enters your property. They make a alarm for driveways that is a motion sensor, sounds a alarm in your house when someone comes into your driveway. Can be setup anywhere, small inconspicuous, wireless, and he won't hear alarm. I know someone who uses one to alert him to deer in his garden, could be used for predator control also. $18 for this one; http://tinyurl.com/jd6m2zd
Or beer cans/soda cans with a few stones in them, stung to fishing line, setup throughout your yard, if you could hear it in your house. Or if you want to be cruel, boards with long nails in them, I bet you do hear the screaming in your house....
I don't think you have the right to shoot someone unless your life is in imminent danger, shooting someone for trespassing could get you a prison sentence depending on the circumstances. Even people that have shot burglars have ended up in jail.
For self protection, I wouldn't recommend a handgun unless it has a laser sight. Handguns are not easy to shoot accurately without A LOT of practice if you don't have the laser sight. And very inaccurate with their short barrels at anything not up close. Big bore hunting handguns are highly accurate even at long distance shots but kick like a mule.
Shotgun is a much better choice for home defense IMHO, and less likely someone is going to get hit with a stray bullet down the street, neighbors house, etc. 12ga kicks a lot, they do make reduced recoil shells though, 20ga kicks less and also there is reduced recoil shells available, .410 hardly kicks at all and is still very effective and the do make a few different style options defense buckshot rounds for them. I would recommend the actual shotgun in .410 but there is handguns available in .410, check out the Taurus Judge series.
We're looking into the alarm now, thanks.

Just to reiterate: this guy is insane. He climbs barbed wire and crawls on the ground to 1. throw trash in people's lawns, and 2. commit bestiality. When he's noticed us watching him as he cases properties - he comes around more, not less. Pretty sure this guy would be dangerous if it came to an on-property confrontation.

Gun advice noted. Thanks for the recs.

My blue wheaten Ameraucana and BCM hatch didn't do very well.  I have one BWA that has spraddle leg and one BCM zipped and stayed in the egg for over 24 hours with its beak sticking out of the shell.  When I came home from work and saw it was still in the egg I pulled it out.  The poor thing just lays on its side.  I have hand fed and hand watered it.  Now its bending its neck like it has crooked neck.  I am heading to Auburn in an hour to pick up the kids from school and will stop by Tractor Supply and get some vit/electrolyte.  Maybe that will help.  I have it in a pantyhose sling like on this thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/655937/please-help-young-chick-cant-stand-or-walk-without-help .   I'm worried because I work Fri, Sat and Sunday.  I'm not sure if that is too cruel to leave it for 11 hours or I should just put it down.

Sorry about the bad hatch :hugs

The one that can't walk or stand, have you checked it for slipped tendon? If it is slipped tendon, this is just my opinion, but I'd put it down. I've had two chicks with it before and they can't get around to get food and water for themselves so they just slowly waste away until they're put out of their misery. It's really really hard to fix. You can try, but most people don't have a lot of success.

I don't believe its slipped tendon. I've had a slipped tendon chick in the past and it slowly died over weeks as it got smaller and smaller. I believe this is neurological from being in the egg too long. With the bent neck now, it is difficult to assess if it can survive. For all its been through it is a fighter. I will try the electrolyte/vit and see if that has any effect.

On day 3 now of incubation and I couldn't help myself. I candled. So far if I'm right they are all doing good. Little weird looking blobs in the egg that were not there to start with. Cross your fingers for me. I'm getting nervous now, the excitement is gone way to fear of losing the entire batch.
that why I dont incubate ...Im a nervous wreck ...let the hens Do it ..
I think TiTi is broody again ..I gave her 3 eggs ..I think ...I think someone may have donated one ..there are 4 now

Well that stupid bird was at the dinningroom window this am. Woke me up as I slept on the pull out couch. The GD spent the night and slept with gramma. Wonder if the bird knew and was just trying aggravate me.

Anyhow it took off and I suspect he is seeing his reflection. We have quite a few Robins around here.

In other news. planted Kale, pumkin and buttercup squash. Garlic is coming up in places planted last year. Such is life. Too those Rose of sharons will be a pain as I have to dig out little ones that are growing near the fence.

I think my girls have decided to make a nest in a downed tree out back. They have spent 4 days digging a hole in/under it and now there are 5 eggs and a chicken . So far there has been a chicken it it consistently since 8 am. Oh well what's 5 more eggs to add to the 41 already cooking?

So, I can't remember WHO gave the tip this past fall on Garlic, but my garlic is growing for the first year EVER!!! Now I'd like to know when and how to harvest it.  Could the person who shared the tip on growing garlic successfully please speak up so I can give you a standing ovation please???!!!! :clap :ya :weee :bow

Happy Growing everyone!!

I usually harvest my garlic around July. The tips will start to die back, turn yellow when its ready.

Sorry about your hatch. I have been in the same boat. I had to cull a chick with a leg problem too.

On a better note, I'm finally having a better hatch. So far 3 Swedish flower hatched. The one that pipped at the wrong end I finally helped out a bit, but it finished on its own. Another one hatched but was so sticky I had to rinse it under water. The other just hatched and is ok so far. 3 more are pipped and only one did nothing. The rest of the eggs in the bator are not due to hatch until tomorrow.
