Welcome to the thread! You should check out the chickenstock page and see if that's something you'd like to come to. It's at the end of this month :)

Is it okay to put my four new chicks in the coop at night with the big girls? I'm planning to keep them separated during the day for a while to come, but was thinking they could be in the coop together at night?

Forgot why I came on .

I've got frozen gooseberries and need 1 pound for my recipe. How do I figure the amount?

I pulled out Tab's pound cake recipe since I'm doing jams and jellies to clean out space in the freezer.

I did use 4 cups of frozen berries and that worked out fine for the Gooseberry/strawberry jam.

I just don't know how to convert the weight recipes.
my grandma used to say "a pint's a pound the world around" and every once in a while that makes perfect sense to me. I'm pretty confused about conversions though.

My geese have vanished :( Not Lacie thank goodness but the two buff crosses I bought specifically to keep her company have just disappeared. They were canada goose crosses so I'm wondering if they just took off with a passing flock or something. No sign of them, no signs of predation, just gone into thin air. I'm thinking they just left because they had been straying pretty far from the coop lately, even up to the neighbor's pond which none of my birds visit. I'm thinking maybe they were up there and a flock of canada geese came in and they decided to head out with them when they left.

Good thing I have my babies so Lacie won't be lonely for long.

I've been under the weather so my coop plans are way behind schedule. I really need another grow out coop with a place for supplemental heat. I have 11 meaties, 24 EE/OE chicks, and 9 Brabanter chicks that all need a place to live.

I wouldnt ...unless they are separated from them

X2!

No! No! No! Pecking orders usually don't go good if they do not have a big bad mean mamma to protect them. Chickens are not nice creatures, can be nice and lovable, but I think more towards the bears, coyotes, wolves and lions kinda nice and lovable....If they were fully feathered half growed and able to duck and run and learn their place then yeah...

I have this recipe for Pound cake that uses 10 eggs.

You could make pound cakes to freeze or give to friends and family.

DW says you never go anywhere empty handed so a pound cake would make a nice hostess gift when going to visit friends or family. I like to add Orange flavoring, but there are others. Rum, Lemon, etc. etc.

It will go nice with some homemade jam. I have a nice Strawberry/pineapple jam that I like. Tops has a sale on raspberries and strawberries, buy two get three free. I like to buy them and freeze them. Though I hope to someday have enough of my OWN raspberries. I should probably start a Strawberry patch too.

I just printed it out cuz I have lots of eggs too. I may be hard to find buyers as Aldi's has eggs for 69 cents a dozen. Folks will go for that rather than spend $3.

Here's a handy tool for people who cook near a computer of any sort.
I'm now technically over my legal limit- I'm allowed 5 hens, this will make 7 (although the plan is to give one away eventually). Everyone think good thoughts for me that since they don't smell or bug anyone I wont get reported!!

Fingers crossed. As long as no one with malicious intent is watching and counting, you should be good. Bonus points if they're the same colors.

Superglue might work. It's original purpose was as emergency skin glue. Or if you can keep it clean & it's not to large a wound, it may heal w/o closure. Best of luck!

TSC has this stuff in a tube,

Lambert Kay EMT Gel contains the active ingredient Type 1 Hydrolysate of Collagen which provides a matrix for new cell growth.
  • Seals and protects wounds
  • Promotes rapid healing
  • Relieves pain & itching
  • Reduces scarring
  • Non-toxic and non-sensitizing
Poultry: Yes

I swear by it!!
Personally witnessed it heal up a super bad wound on my dog, some people like to use 'blue coat', I will for now on use 'betadine' (povidone iodine) and then that lambert kay collagen stuff.
Besides that when you capon a cockerel, they just fold the skin over, no sutures or stitches, no nothing, and it heals up.
Phoreda and Beercan,

Thank you for the help and suggestions. We were able to clean it up really well and used a couple of butterfly bandaids to close it up. He's in a crate in the mudroom now until he heals up a bit. I don't want him going out and getting it dirty and infected.

Dave
