NY chicken lover!!!!

Are the tufts a trait that isn't always passed down? Tufts sure are cute!

They can vary in size. Unlike crested ducks where the trait is actually caused by a hole in the skull (which is why it's so dangerous to have female crested ducks with a drake and why it often causes neurological issues and death, and why you can't breed two crested ducks together without a lot of the embryos dying during incubation) the tufts are just caused by a ball of skin on the top of the head. The larger the ball, the larger the tuft :) For example Lacie, my very first roman tufted, doesn't have a very large tuft:

700

But when she breeds with the little gander I have with the larger tuft, I'm hoping her offspring will have more prominent tufts than she does.

So, while I sit with my girls every day after work, I pour some beer and turn on the country station......does anyone else have chickens that are deathly afraid of the Zac Brown Band?? Doesn't matter which song, it's weird as heck.

not afraid of a Band but my one roo is not a fan of my son's. He is ok with people just not the 3 boys. I also have 1 BA hen that hides every time a semi drives down my road. Which is funny as can be as we have 4 that live on this road.

Very interesting! I was wondering the relation to the thin skulled crested ducks. Glad the goslings don't have the same issues. Here's hoping ur tufted gander brings it all to the table, lol.
