NY chicken lover!!!!

Have you spoken with your neighbors? I find that some folks are happy to hear a rooster crow. My neighbors don't seem to mind.

You know I just had the thought that the roosters crow might inspire a country feel and bring reduced stress. Perhaps some of us equate "the country" with a slower and relaxing atmosphere. Maybe even help with meditation.

Or it could just be me. I just came in from outside. There is a nice breeze and seeing the chickens in the yard transports me to a more peaceful time and place.
I don't feel less stressed when the cockerels start crowing at 4:30 AM. It's not a pleasant crowing sound yet. My lead roo replies to each cockerel so it's a screechy loud "RRRRRRRRRRRR," followed by a more developed crow- repeatedly from 4:30 AM to about 6 AM. I definitely enjoy and appreciate my lead rooster's crow. He took a while to start crowing and isn't as loud as some.

Every neighbor that has talked to me directly about my chickens has liked the sound of the roosters. The one neighbor that yelled, "Shut up!" was yelling that in the middle of the day and didn't actually say anything to me. I've also yelled, "Shut up!" at my rooster, so I didn't take that as a comment about not wanting them around, just that the rooster was being a jerk at the time. And honestly, he beat me to that comment by a fraction of a second. It doesn't happen often, but sometimes B.B, King (my rooster) gets crow-happy.

rancher, I completely agree that seeing the chickens in the yard is peaceful and takes me to a place that's more simple.

My advice to anyone overwhelmed by things is to TURN OFF THE NEWS. It can add to your stress level and in humans like chickens stress kills.

We can't change the world just our little corner off it. Make your corner better by doing good for others. Volunteering, donating blood, give some eggs away to the mail person or garbage man, take a walk or just picking up the trash on the side of the road can make you feel better.

X2.
No ordinance on roosters here. I love a rooster crowing, DW does not when I forget to lock them up and they end up next to the house wee hrs of the early summer mornings....Lol! I did cull 24hr a day and night crowing silkie roo, not putting up with that...Giant rooster I have now is loud, but low tone, and doesn't crow excessively, and mainly in the morning. When you have a bunch of roos I think you have a contest going on.
Neighbors haven't complained, I don't think they can, some shoot guns non-stop, another one has a supper LOUD modified stock car and likes to tune it at night, DW complains to me, not really a big deal, only does it occasionally, it's a shock when you first hear it, doesn't last long, just a few minutes. Why at this time? she says (10pm), just a guess, never asked him, but I imagine it's cause that's the time he races, wants the temp, barometric pressure, humidity, to be the same...IDK? Their dog likes to come over sometimes also, I help her catch it, she says the dog doesn't listen to her only her husband, she usually leashes it when she takes it out, big yellow lab mix. Don't care much for it when it runs through my garden...uggghhh, I shoot bottle rockets at it sometimes, runs back home then...Lol!
Gotta get along with your neighbors, I have some good/cool ones thankfully.

I had a silkie roo and he was a pain. Crowed much to often. I think Bantams are bigger crowers. Well more often.

My Ee is a pain. He gets to squawking much to often and I have to go out and calm them down.

My Dels are not so bad, nor is my Maran. I find that once I'm up and let them out things calm down.

Not all roosters are the same. Just like men, some gotta sound off and guard their territory.

Generally it's the good roosters who don't have to make a big noise.

Around here it's the "squeaky rooster" who get the ax.

Been AWOL for a bit - shift change at work and vacation - but I finally got my first egg!!!! Had to share!

Congrats on the egg. Hope you get many, too many more.

The goslings are getting so big! They have their big bird voices now. They are spending the day loose in the run that they'll be living in once they're fully grown, and the process of getting them and Lacie and my Canada goose hybrid integrated into one flock has started.

Did any of the duck eggs you gave to Lacie hatch?

Unfortunately, no. I don't know how, since everyone says birds can't count, but she somehow knew when I first gave them to her that she hadn't started with them and she kicked them all out of her nest and they vanished - either she ate them or the ravens did.

But it gets even stranger. I, just in case she lost hers, had put some under other broodies and had some in my own incubator. Well, the two in my incubators quit for some reason, as did most of the ones under the broodies, but I had one live one left. So, when it was close to hatch time, I actually took one of her infertile eggs and swapped them out for the one duck egg, figuring that even if she was counting eggs that way she'd have the same amount she started with and that this way it'd be okay.

Nope. She somehow knew that one egg wasn't hers either and again she did not sit on it and it vanished, either eaten by her or the ravens. But, she kept her two other infertile eggs, which she somehow knew were hers as opposed to the duck egg.
