NY chicken lover!!!!

@tao chick I have 2 light colored chicks that I think are theirs . I won't know for sure for several months though. Also 2 of the eggs she is on are from them as well. I am not interfering with her brooding process though. Today she actually yelled at me for moving the babies out of the cage. So as of today she has the cage to herself and the babies can sleep in the coop.

Hello fellow NY chicken folks! I have a flock of 10 up in the ADK. Just thought I'd drop in and say hi to you all. Some interesting reading for sure!

So I've two hens that didn't hatch a chick. Well they did but I had taken them and left them with eggs. However neither hatched a chick as I had hoped. So I gave them both more eggs tonight.

I've got one Delaware hen with 10 chicks, one Delaware hen with two chicks, one Marans hen with six chicks, one with three chicks and a Blue EE with one chick.

I would have tried to give the two remaining hens a chick that had hatched but they're too old. I didn't have enough day-olds.

I will have to make sure the two remaining hens get lots of food and water. I'm sure each will hatch at least one chick as they've got EE's and they're doing good.

I would rather have had Marans chicks but their eggs are hard to hatch. I plan to trim their butt feathers and see if that helps. I just need to get a very sharp pair of scissors. I don't want to be pulling on their feathers now do I?

I'm surprised Big Delores didn't go broody and more of the EE's. They usually do.

Hope all is well and everyone is enjoying summer. Have been trying to keep up with everyone's posts, but I have been so busy. You would think that having the summer off I would have things slow down...but not so much.

Last few hatches have been bad. Nothing has hatched, Not doing anything different.. I'm blaming it on the weather. I have got to get some more eggs in the bator soon. I would like to get at least one more good hatch this year. I do have a broody sitting on eggs right now. She is my tiny d'uccle. She started out with trying to sit on 10 eggs. I had to take some from her. She was not happy with me at all. She is down to 2 right now. I candled them tonight and they both are moving and look like they may have internal pips. I didn't write the date down, but I figured that they should be hatching any day now.

Just finished my latest coop and wanted to share. I am very proud of it. I did it all by myself. No help from DH this time.

I was given (for free) a coop from a neighbor. They were given it for some ducks that they got this summer, but they didn't want it and they were thinking about turning it into a big bon fire, but then they asked me if I wanted it...and of course I said yes. I was told that at one point it was this other persons turkey tractor (the one that they got it from). It was in bad shape. One side was made of indoor paneling that was falling apart. It had no floor in it, a broken wheel and it felt like if I pushed on it hard enough it would fall over,

It took me a little over 2 weeks to take it all apart and put it back together. I enclosed the little house part, added a roof and new mesh on it. I used as much of the original coop as could, but there is a lot of new stuff as well. Also added doors on each end so I could clean out the house and so when I have ducks in it I can clean out the pool. When I have chickens in it I can lay down something and added bedding to it if I want to.

For now it will house some extra ducks that I have, but as I built it I also kept in mind that I need to be able to house chicken in it also so I made it adjustable.

I added a special window on the back door. I can easily add a roost to the inside of the house and the run, and I can add net boxes to the back door. I made the window so I can unscrew the window from the inside and remove the mesh. This way I can attach the nest boxes to the back door and can open the window to get the eggs. I know I will need to change out the hook when the time comes that I want to switch it to a chicken house, right now I just have a simple hook on the window.

The only thing that I have left to do is that I need to get the wheels for the one end of the coop to replace the one that was broken and I'd like to add a permanent roof to the run part.

So what would pluck a chicken then carry off the body? Fox? I know the spitz would have been a separate predator the can reach through the cage, that was preventable and has been remedied.

So Sorry ...it sounds like it may be 2 predators..
A fox wont pluck a chicken ...but if the chicken fought ..it can lose lots of feathers ..
Then take the body with the rest of the feathers .

We have had a similar problem here ...I still suspect a squirrel .
2 babies first disappeared everyone was in their coops ..
There is a small hole under the shed into the coop .
A few days ago 2 more disappeared one mommy got upset and ran at the hole ..
it was a chipmunk hole at 1st ...which I didnt think that would hurt anyone ...so I left it
both times a little later I later saw a squirrel come from the direction of behind the coop and across the back yard ...it never is carrying anything
A Mommy chased it ...out of the yard
Well I climbed under there Wed or thurs and put some 2 x 4 in front of the hole with long nails and pounded in rocks underneath .
I have been gone fri sat and sun all day ..I noticed today its made another hole ...No one is missing so far .
I thought of putting the cat in the coop during the day ...or get some rat poison and stick it under the shed where the chickens cant get it .
i have a dirt floor which I like because everything decomposes or composts right in the coop
