NY chicken lover!!!!

Bad year for the veggie garden for sure. Of close to 20 winter squash plants I have seen 3 or 4 female flowers. None have taken so far. Barely any zucchini either, two from each plant so far. Tomatoes are looking good, but the rabbits ate most everything else, so it's either way behind (peppers and eggplants) or totally gone (all greens, beats, carrots, green beans, etc).
Went out to check on things this morning and looks like maybe a critter had an accident and snapped two of my tomatillo plants in half... Oh well, I'll take what I can get with this crazy drought!

@rancher hicks, regarding your butterfly bush question, some plants get huge, some newer varieties are dwarf, so stay a more manageable size. In the past we used to worry about them not being truly hardy, but newer varieties are improved there as well. Prune some in fall, to a manageable size, but wait until they bud out in the spring to see if you need to prune them all the way back. Sometimes they will grow from stems, some year from the roots. Can't remember if you had other questions, hope that helps.

> 40 eggs in the bator. 22 chickens including 1 too many roosters. I need to expand the run in the small coop. And countless other chores and goals.
Getting ready for my baby boy to start pre-K next month. I've been a stay at home mom for 8 years. I've been asked by many "what will you do now?" (as if the mom job gets easier when they're in school) and I'm honestly torn between so many ideas. I've started the chicken and garden "business" (although it is still very early), so I know that will take much of my free time. The other considerations are renewing my social worker license and working part time or volunteering in that field or simply volunteering my time when and where I can. It will be an interesting transition for me.
I have multiple hens taking a break from laying. Cleaned/freshened the nest boxes to see if that helps.

I hope all is well.
You sound just like me. Last year my youngest started kindergarten so with both kids full time in school I had the time to go back to work. I had been a stay at home mom for 8 years.. I had a hard time trying to decide what to do with my self that I could make a little money at. I ended up starting to substitute at my kids school. It started out as just a few days a week. Then I realized that I really liked doing it and the teachers started to request me so by the end of the year I was working almost every day. I love having the same schedule as the kids. Makes it a lot easier with no real babysitter...

I have four marans hens to GIVE away. Laying 1-2 eggs a day. I am going to downsize.

The garden is disappointing to say the least. Squash not going to give up anything. I will be ripping out the plants as there are lots of flowers but no squash.

Tomatoes not good. Four plants were not what the label said. Rather little yellows and not to my liking. Those that came up on their own have done better.

Peppers turning red but small in size.

Today I'll be digging up the garlic.

So anyhow I'd like these hens gone to save money. Perhaps others too as the mood moves me. I haven't made any decisions on the chicks but some will at least have to go.
If you don't have any takers on your Marans I wouldn't mind taking them...

It looks like my garden is going pretty good this year. We just gave away a bunch of squash and zuchinni. My tomatoes are doing pretty good. Most of the plants have green tomatoes on them, just waiting till they turn red. My carrots and beets look like they are growing decent. My biggest issue is with the weeds. I keep the weeds pulled around my plants, but I planted corn and nothing came up so that whole area is just weeds. We are going to try to get that area cleared again so that I can plant some things for a late harvest...

My garden has been hit and miss so far this year. Beans and peas are doing really well. We've canned 60 quarts of beans and froze 2 gallons of shelled peas this week. Corn is doing well also and should have a pretty good crop this year. I didn't have any peppers come up at all, and very few carrots. Would anyone possibly be interested in doing some trading? I'll probably have enough beans canned in the next week or two to last us the year.

I've considered substituting. I didn't think I'd have the demeanor for it, but it might be worth trying.

My garden is ok. Weeds are getting the best of much of mine too- especially the strawberries.

I am a bit stressed. I gave my birds Wazine because I saw worms in multiple hens poops and had tried natural remedies to no avail. I read about a two week withdrawal period and went for it. I just read another article that said because there is no withdrawal period on the label that you should never eat the eggs again. Ugh. I could cry right now.

Don't worry about it. Eat the eggs in two weeks, it's fine. Just be aware that wazine only kills roundworms so if your birds have any other type of worm this isn't going to work for them. It also only kills adults, not eggs or larvae. You should worm them with a broad spectrum wormer like valbazen or fenbendazole in ten days to kill anything else they might have. Ivermectin would work too and as a bonus it also kills biting mites and scaly leg mites.

Do ya think 5.56 is too small if I hit him in the head?

They travel pretty fast, may be adequate. :-D
.12 gauge slug is good.
It's actually legal in most cases ie endangering your life or livestock, damaging property.
This from DEC;

"If destroying livestock or an apiary, no permit is necessary to take a black bear; however, you must promptly notify the nearest Environmental Conservation Officer (ECO) to make arrangements for delivering the carcass (find an ECO near you). Also, DEC may issue a permit for a landowner to take if there is proof that the bear is causing property damage"
