NY chicken lover!!!!

@ Gramma and @ Beer Can: You guys are giving me serious garden envy. Your 50' rows are bigger than my whole yard. But I have room for the Hen Pen, and for the dogs to do their thing (behind the tool shed) and play (in front of the shed ~LOL). I trade eggs for yardwork with the guy next door, and he grows veggies, I'm thinking I should ask him for any "scratch and dent" stuff that might have been gnawed on by squirrels or bugs. The birds would probably think the bugs are a bonus, like a prize in the bottom of a cereal box!

IDK why people are always so blown away by all the stuff that chickens can and will eat. I mean that probably has a lot to do with how they got domesticated in the first place; some friendly-ish jungle fowl start checking out a village trash heap and next thing you know: yard birds!

*I had heard about the green /raw potato peels, so when we have them they either get thrown way or buried in the compost that the birds _don't_ have access to. Believe me, these city chix are spoiled plenty... now that it's getting so I can go outside more than once per day and not feel like I'm going to just wither and die.

Well I went to the Fair again. With DD and hers. I had a good time. Ate too much.

Left in time to see Luv and have breakfast. Great deal one egg and toast for a $1. I think we got more than an eggs worth. I had that plus two peices of French toast. DD wanted the eggs a bit more firm but they were fine for me AND the french toast was good. I'll be doing that again next year. Lord willing.

The parking wasn't bad IF you left early. I told DD to be I wanted to be there early to see Luv and get breakfast.

The first time I went we parked at Shoppingtown and waited a long time for the bus. Not happy about that and you know I complained. DD driving was scarier than any ride I've been on of late. We didn't get to the midway till late. By then I was too tired to stand in a line and ready to go home. They do take Easy pass for parking which of course DD used since it's MY easy pass in her car. Gotta love kids. I'm just glad they want to hang with me.

There were Cochins for sale at the fair, but I don't buy birds there.

I did talk to a guy who had birds for sale but he wasn't very nice. Talking about not giving out his address or phone number and shooting people who come unannounced to his place. He talked too much of gun violence. Said he had birds stolen once long ago I guess. Talked about PITA and what not. Really not nice. I did give him my card and said he should join us but don't expect him to be here. He said he doesn't use a computer, yada, yada, yada. ..............

Why do people who are not friendly or people people get involved in people things?

I try to be nice because I want to get more folks involved in this hobby and hobby farming.

I wasn't impressed by any of the birds there and never have been. I suggest you buy eggs or chicks from folks here because they're friendlier. Hatching your own is safer than buying from Auctions and what not. That guy did mention going to auctions too.

I've been to shows and talked to show people and some of them are just not nice people. I used to show guinea pigs. Trust me $25 for a guinea pig is far to much. I used to give them away. Rather than be over crowded and not take good care of them. You have to breed a lot of babies to get a good show quality pig.

Anyhow I had a good time. I think the Fair is a good deal. Prices on food were good.

Bought my year supply of soap from the Morning Mist Farm lady. I like her soaps, better than I can find here and her prices are good. She puts a good amount of fragrance in her soaps. I would have spent more If I had more money. Things must be good for her because she mentioned a new store.

The midway is wider and there were picnic tables with umbrellas. Benches too. I liked the Misters, they helped keep you cool. We managed to find places to sit when we ate.

The potato set up is much better. More places to sit. Plus they had the soda for $1 in the same place.

Didn't get any free trees but did get some nice posters for free.

Well I expect I'll sleep tonight.

TTFN,

Love ya, Rancher

I wanted to try the potato setup but when we got there it looked to be about an hour wait. We had a piece of pizza and a fried brownie - I don't normally eat fried stuff but it's a fair so I guess i had to try once.

I thought my barnyard mixes were better than most of the fair birds but I'm not impartial.. :)

thankfully we got there early enough on Saturday that we could park in the regular lots and didn't have to go to the mall.

Would anyone happen to know someone who might be selling Cochins. I got out of them a while ago and I want to start over again. I have one hen so if anyone knows where I could find a nice rooster or rooster and hens that'd be great. I'm looking for both bantam and LF so if anyone might be able to help me please pm me. Thanks

@ke5hde has Cochins - he hasn't posted on here in awhile, but can find him on Facebook as Sycamore Bend Farm.

Rooster Crowing contest ..
Interviewing John ? who is a organizer of most chicken events at the fair

http://videos.syracuse.com/post-standard/2014/08/rooster_crowing_contest_at_the.html
I love John! He came over and visited with us every morning and brought all the eggs that the birds laid at the fair! It was nice to have fresh eggs each morning especially when I would forget to bring in some of my own to eat. He is a really nice guy.

I did end up going - it was fun! I did go through the poultry barn - I saw several chickens that looked a little iffy, hunched over with eyes closed. Hopefully it was just stress..

Didn't get in until after 11, unfortunately - I TRIED to leave earlier, but my other half was slowin' me down..

We don't have kids so we were pretty much able to cover the whole thing in a few hours. I liked it, but not sure if I'd go again if they don't fix the parking situation. THankfully we got in before they started closing all the parking lots.
I'm sorry that we missed each other...There is always next year. I'm sure that I'll be there. I mentioned that I was thinking about not doing it next year but they started to threaten me with a spatula so looks like I will be back next year.

Ke5dhe has some really nice quality bantam cochins. I think that he just has white and mottled, but not totally sure what he has.

lol rancher this post made me laugh with your description of mr. paranoid and his guns...
But I also had to laugh because I have noticed the same behaviors and found the observation a bit perplexing. Even though I'm not the most socially outgoing person myself, I could at least engage in conversation about my pets or if I had a fair animal when I was in 4-H (able to talk about the animal.) Just recently mr.baunlee and I went to our county fair and were looking at some beautiful goats a girl had. I noticed her tack stall nearby and went to ask her what breed they are. I know 0% about goats. However she was super odd like an alien that was moonlighting for the night at a fair posing as a farm girl but there secretly to observe "humans." I get what you are saying though, it is odd in community settings where there are a lot of people and its reasonably expected that someone at the event would be curious, interested, perhaps captivated and what could have been a learning opportunity turns into some oddness.

Hi everyone. I'm in Stone Ridge, NY. I am giving away a True Black Ameraucana rooster. I'm selling 2 nicer roos, but I need to get rid of this guy fast as he went after my four year old a couple of times. We don't have the heart to end his life or anything.... But he needs to go. Anybody want him? Also, if anyone is interested in the nicer ones, please let me know. Ordered four straight run Ameraucana chicks in April and ended up with four roosters!

Thanks!

Weird question: anybody got an estimate on how old bantam chicks need to be before they are too big to fit through the diamond weave of chain link fence? Clearly I was not planning this bantam menace chick thing enough steps ahead; the bantam Ameraucana chicks are now 4 weeks old and driving their hatch-mother bonkers. I'd let her take them outside of the broody suite (a TSC kit "coop") but the hen yard around the main coop is -you guessed it- chain link dog kennel panels. To test for size I put a scrap of plastic trellis with openings about the same size into their run area. After the magnitude 7 panic died down they began playing in & out the windows and have not really let up all week! On the plus side, if they're fooling around on that, their mom gets a break for a hot minute.

Hi guys. Yeah I do have some "extra" birds this year. I have pairs and extra males available. They are bantam mottled and hatched later in the spring.

I've had this problem with just poultry wire and regular sized chicks. I suggest running some hardware cloth around the perimeter. The two foot high stuff should be enough. Of late if I find the poultry wire rusted near the bottom of my runs, I take the two foot high stuff, bend it out from the run and zip tie it along the bottom. I've been planting mint or other herbs on the outside. Some herbs the chickens won't eat. Like Oregano.

Everyone else, Have you put Oregano in your water like the Ad for Purdue says? Won't that affect the taste of the eggs?

Chris

I had considered a Mottled rooster over my Frizzle hens, but at this late date in the year, I can't. Besides I've just want him for a short time. Too I'd prefer a large bird. My Frizzles are Dels over bantam but the new girls are medium size.
I was also considering a Lav or Blue Orpington roo to eventually have Lav or Blue frizzles.

I'm surprised I don't see more of the Barred Lemon/ Yellow orpingtons. They were quite popular at one time. Just like the Lavenders.

Has anyone seen any Lavender Wyandottes? Or Blues? Locally I mean.
