@ Gramma and @ Beer Can: You guys are giving me serious garden envy. Your 50' rows are bigger than my whole yard. But I have room for the Hen Pen, and for the dogs to do their thing (behind the tool shed) and play (in front of the shed ~LOL). I trade eggs for yardwork with the guy next door, and he grows veggies, I'm thinking I should ask him for any "scratch and dent" stuff that might have been gnawed on by squirrels or bugs. The birds would probably think the bugs are a bonus, like a prize in the bottom of a cereal box!
IDK why people are always so blown away by all the stuff that chickens can and will eat. I mean that probably has a lot to do with how they got domesticated in the first place; some friendly-ish jungle fowl start checking out a village trash heap and next thing you know: yard birds!
*I had heard about the green /raw potato peels, so when we have them they either get thrown way or buried in the compost that the birds _don't_ have access to. Believe me, these city chix are spoiled plenty... now that it's getting so I can go outside more than once per day and not feel like I'm going to just wither and die.
