NY chicken lover!!!!

He didn't make it through the night. I looked him over and there were no signs of injury or illness. He seemed a little off yesterday. I thought he was eating and drinking, but his crop seemed empty today.

. No signs of illness or injury, but I will look closer throughout the day.
So Sorry ...How Old was he ? Around 8 months ? if they have heart defect they usually die ..around that age ...
Probably Nothing you could help - a internal problem...

He was about 18 months old. My sister in law suggested that he ate something poisonous. I've been pretty careful about what they eat, but I can't know for sure that wasn't it. My best guess is he was injured in the coop and I didn't see any signs of distress until it was too late to save him. He was crowing and mating on Sunday and Monday. The hens all look great. I'll be keeping a close eye on all of them.

I'm currently searching for Brabanters. I have a couple good leads and I'm considering driving 3.5 hours to pick some up. If I have a lead Brabanter or two then my blue egg layers offspring would stay blue egg layers but with only 1 blue egg laying gene to pass on to the next generation. I'd eventually get another purebred blue-egg gene rooster though.

So much to consider.

The question on FB was do different chickens colored egg taste different. This is my response.

I asked my chickens and the brown egg layers say theirs is best but the Blue egg layers say theirs taste best. The Marans say everyone knows the French have the best tasting food so theirs taste best. The English Orpingtons say that theirs are "bang on" the best. The Mediterranean Scicilians say research has shown the "Mediterranean diet" is best so theirs taste best. The Australian Aussies say, Hey Mate, ours is best. The Americans breeds are still fighting over whether to let the Russian Orloffs into the coop. So take it for what it's worth.

Hey rancher. They are separate now. I mean, Jay Z is the only roo with my girls. My BCM boys got in a gang fight and I have the one hanging in the house with me right now (a joy on mornings) and the other, I'm trying to convince my dad to take him. He's a great bcm roo but I cant have him fighting with my breeder BCM.

ANYWAYS. I will gather eggs from beyonce (my birchen hen). I wish I could give you a firm timeline but don't count your eggs till they have hatched haha. I have considered buying a dozen birchens from the original source (as I may have mentioned before?) but couldn't justify a whole dozen (or her price point per/dozen for that matter) any time soon. I would sell my chicks or a dozen eggs to you cheap since you are from the BYC forum fam. like $12 a chick sound good? since jay z is with all the girls It's really just about setting her eggs and not the copper hens. also getting her eggs before they freeze, so I might bring them both into my sun room which isn't utilized by us in the winter anyways.

Just be careful that you wait three weeks until after he's been the only roo with the girls or you will still be hatching chicks from the others roosters. I actually hatched a chick from a different rooster five weeks after separating once. I couldn't believe it, it was the craziest thing.

Lol! :-D

My only concern is the shipping. I like checking my chicks out personally. I have read many horror stories concerning shipped chicks, but if I can not find what I'm looking for then I may bite the bullet....

I've had great luck with shipped chicks, many times none at all died. Only time I had some that didn't make it, it was days later, not sure why, lost I think six out of 22. I never use any electrolytes or medicated feed or any additives, nutridrench etc. Maybe I wouldn't have lost those if I did,IDK? Just never had any ever die without it.
