Hello, Joanne!!!
I've been keeping my fingers crossed for you!! Do you hear any tiny "peeps" coming from any of the eggs??! Any signs of a "pip" yet??! Keep us informed!! Good luck!!! Hopefully tomorrow you'll have many tiny fuzzy butts !!
Sincerely, Kathy

UPDATE very busy weekend - 5 BCMs and 6 silkie eggs have hatched. Pics coming soon.
Joanne

Hi There, Joanne!!!
Congrats on your new arrivals!!! You did very well for your first try at hatching......you should be proud of yourself!!! A lot of people I know usually get very few (or none) on their first try. And if they were shipped eggs 50% hatch rate is about average. I only got one batch of shipped eggs that was had a 100% hatch rate.......Ameraucanas from Fillmore, NY.
Again, thanks for the update......and on the 11 new fuzzy butts!!! We'll eagerly be awaiting pics!!!
Regards, Kathy

Good job Joanne! I hear it's hard to get right the first time. I'm setting up my incubator this week for the first time. I'm already starting to second guess myself. So many questions. Is it too cold to get eggs from the coop and try to hatch? How cold is too cold? Is a 50% hatch rate good for a first try, or only on shipped eggs? I am like sooo new to this stuff.
BTW.. Is anybody else thanking the powers that be that we missed out on all the snow.

We missed out on the last big storm, but we are getting this new one. We are maybe going to get a foot. We will see, the weather people are usually wrong lol.

Good Evening, Omani!!!
You should definitely try setting some of your own eggs!! Even though it's still rather cold , the eggs should be fine as long as they don't freeze(that would definitely kill any existing embryo). Try to gather the eggs as soon as possible in the morning.
I recently ordered 10 Delaware eggs from a guy in NJ. They got held up in the postal truck that broke down for many hours en route to my house.....that was the day it was really COLD here(10-15 below with the wind chill). Of course there was no heat in the truck....it wasn't working. Anyway, by the time I received the eggs they were very cold......I thought there was NO WAY they were viable anymore. But I set them in the incubator anyway. Last night I candled them.....and ,to my surprise, all 10 of them have embryos developing!!!! Even the extra egg he sent looks as though it may be OK.....not sure yet though. I may have another 100% hatch rate....I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I'm very happy!!!
A 50% hatch rate is about average for shipped eggs.......no matter how well they pack them for their journey so many variables must be taken into account. Were they handled roughly by the Post Office.....were they x-rayed.....were they packed properly?? You should have better %'s with your own eggs....as long as the roosters are doing their job(smile). Give it a try....it's really a lot of fun.
Sicerely, Kathy

Joanne I am soooo happy for you! I hope my 4 that are left hatch healthy and happy this weekend. I go into my first lockdown ever on Thursday. Then I get to try to hatch a batch of baregretchen BLRW's I can't wait!!!!

THis time I think they waited til the very last day to announce anything- it's snowing like crazy, but only about 4 inches outside right now. It's getting worse...

I am rather annoyed with this particular storm. It's snowing down by you...schools to the east and west of us are closed and yet it is a normal dry gray winter day here. I want some snow darnit! And a snow day for my older kids would have been so nice, they haven't even had a delay yet this year. Grr!
