NY chicken lover!!!!

This brings up a question that I had been meaning to ask ever since I saw the adorable Silkie chicks at TSC. I don't remember Silkies coming up when I was looking for cold hardy chickens @ Mypetchicken last year, so I didn't even think about them.
My chickens did REALLY well wintering this year.

Can one have Silkies in upstate NY? Do they need more protection in our climate?

Sorry to reply to everyone en masse:

Phil- Hemlock has a tsc? Where on earth is it? The only time I ever go over there is for the fair/demolition derby and can't picture where it would be. Also, I have 3 speckled sussex hens, they are soooooo nice and calm! If you get a good assortment from me along with the marans you may end up with some sort of sussex mix. The father would probably be golden laced wyandotte (doubt the giant blue cochin rooster does much ummm "Business", they say their fertility rates are lower due to their size) as he is the only other rooster I have right now. (don't worry, getting the maran back tomorrow and adding two more turkey eggs to my aunt's brooder when I'm there....think she'll notice?)

Also my neighbors up the road have about 200 ducks (mostly call and a few cayuga that earn them big bucks selling fertile eggs on ebay right now...if you know anyone that wants ducks....if my guineas aren't laying soon I'm going to get you some eggs from the guy I got my keets from last year

Rachel-sorry about the TSC thing, my aunt actually has taken some of her roosters to that butcher when she can't talk my uncle into doing it. (ha ha aunt b!)

Bath auction is May 15th saturday I believe--------I am counting the days till then! I had a blast at the one in the fall and got some great birds! My chicks from Murray McMurray come the monday after so I'm getting a later start than all of you guys!

My broody on the porch gave up, (speckled susex Phil !) I cracked all the eggs and fed them to the dogs (all ten) she must've just liked that spot to hide her eggs, none were developed at all.

there are some natural remedies for chickens if you read up on it. The only thing I've ever done personally is giving them alot of pumpkin in the fall to eat, cleans out bad germies I think I read......I kknow some people also do apple cider vinegar (?) and garlic. Garlic is a natural antibiotic....Aunt B you wanna chime in here? This is your area of expertise!!!!

so, amy, will I see you at the bath auction?
In the meantime, I went and got some chicks today. I wanted some more bantams to raise with my broody and her chicks. Problem is that the bantams weren't here when I needed them. So the broody hen and chicks that I wanted to put them with are now 2 1/2 wks old. I didn't realize how fast they grow! So, the hen realized (that stupid me) got a white chick and she didn't have any white chicks. Now I am stuck with chicks that I have to raise, as soon as the momma started pecking at them I felt compelled to move them. Even the 2 1/2 wk old chicks were pecking at them. Now I have a brooder. Ugh, I knew a brooder was a bad idea...like feeding a heroin addiction...now I have a place for chicks...making it easier to get more. I hope these chicks do well, would love to order some bantam buff orp's. Widh me luck as the only chick I have tried to raise was born with a defect and eventually died and I am scared. I am a lot more knowledgeable now, but still scared.

anyone local interested in a lavender ameraucana rooster. He is very nice gentle rooster to humans but he has it out for my wheaten roo. He hopped the 6ft fence for another round with my wheaten ameraucana and got tore up (he did this last fall and apparently didn't learn his lesson). So his comb and face is all scared up but otherwise he is beautiful. He makes reaallly cute babies!!! PM me if interested.

I have Silkies and I had no problems with them this winter. It was our first winter and apparently I did okay, as I had no casualties.

Can anyone explain to me how I have FOUR Silkie roosters and just two hens, but the eggs that I am getting are not fertilized?!!? I mean, I know how, but... This stinks!! I have a very anti-social hen that is laying. As soon as the coop doors open, she is gone. She doesn't return until it is time to drop her eggs (I think she is laying two a day, as she is the only one I see in there before the eggs appear), which she does in the corner on the floor. Then she disappears again and doesn't come back until lock-down! I am going to have to snatch her up and put her and a roo in the little coop that I have open! I have quite a few eggs in my incubator, as I didn't check for fertility before putting them in there. I am going to candle tomorrow, but I don't have high expectations! I was hoping that I had Silkie and Sebright eggs each day, but I just don't think that's the case.

Thanks for revisiting the info on the Bath auction. I am going to have to put that on my calendar!
