NY chicken lover!!!!

OK, I thought it was just me. Hubby and I were talking about that the other day. If my only contact with chickens was hatching eggs, I would be happy. It is just too cool. As a matter of fact, I think I may have talked him into letting me get eggs from someone else. "Oh, but honey, you can't tell how good the eggs or incubator is with just one batch of your own eggs. You really need to try it with other's eggs, several times." Makes sense, doesn't it? And if we happen to keep some of them, I guess it just couldn't be helped.

When we were looking, we made a list of the types of things that we wanted in a property. After looking around at what was out there, we hired a realtor. They know, or know how to find out about the towns or villages you're interested in. Sometimes, they come up with totally different areas that you might not have considered otherwise. That's how we wound up where we are now. And I wouldn't trade it for the world.

Come move to my area of Gansevoort. I just went on a 5 mile walk and it's like walking through a zoo.. First you get to the cows, then the pond with the muscovy ducks, then more cows, then palomino horses, then assorted chickens and geese, more cows, more horses, alpacas (!) and yet another guy who has a giant yard full of geese. I'm not too worried about getting a few chickens. Oh, and there's black angus cattle wandering around loose in one forested area that I always see by accident (they blend in).

Hehe...that would be quite a commute for my husband. I'm sure we'll find something around this area, it's just a pain in the butt, you know? It's not like Little Falls is a real city (if you know what I mean)...I smell cows on windy days!!

Welcome and we are in Albany County - about 15 min outside the city and currently have about 110 birds!

In our neighborhood there are old pick up trucks, fancy Infinities, loads of dogs, housing developments and us - the house with the chickens!

YEAH FUN!

Anyone interested in the two little Lavender Ameraucana's? They were hatched on Easter. I am selling them because they have a straight comb rather than a pea comb, so they are considered pet quality. $10 for the pair. PM me if you are interested.

Hi Everyone! I have a question, how many eggs can a broody bantam hen handle? All 3 I left on friday are in the exact same nest boxes I left them in!!!! Whooo hoo! I know they can't keep a huge pile warm so is 6 or 7 ok if some are small? Is that too many? the reason I ask is they each have had about 4/5 under them the last few days and I came home to about another dozen guinea eggs, I want to slip a few under each b/c I'm not sure if they bantam eggs they are laying on are fertile (I let them keep about 2 or 3 each of their own in case they are, then added a few blue eggs under each too) I got rid of all my extra roos about a month ago so I highly doubt their eggs are fertile.

If anyone else wants to try their hand at guinea eggs, I am an hour south of Rochester but work there if someone wants to meet me for eggs. I'm getting a few dozen a week now.

Phil---if you're not having luck with the guinea eggs I sent you, please let me know, my aunt had a horrible hatch rate last year with guinea eggs I got from a friend and I think maybe their eggs aren't fertile till later in the season? Hope you're having luck with all the other eggs I sent your way, I'm getting more turkey eggs still of you need more.

Happy Sunday Everyone!
Amy

Ahh, they are so cute, Chicken Stalker.

I started calling the neighborhoods around me, asking about the laws regarding keeping chickens. Of course, no one was around, and despite the people I did talk to saying they'd call me this morning, the phone hasn't rang. *Shrug* Oh well. If we buy a house, I'm just going rebel.

(edit: Actually, the village of Ilion just called. He said Not in the village, although most of the townships in the area are ok.)

We took a drive from to Fly Creek Cider Mill this week. Only a 45 minute drive, on very windy roads way into the country. I saw several houses with chickens, which made me smile. But I noticed a few of them has signs for eggs for sale. Is that legal? I was under the impression it wasn't. If it is illegal, what happens if they are "caught"? Fines? Just curious, my husband asked me since I had told him if we got chickens I couldn't see the eggs.

Hi, Shannonpixie! There are rules about selling eggs, but they don't apply to small time egg sellers. I forget what the regulations are, but it gets into the thousands of dollars- and if you can sell that many eggs, you win the prize!!! Most people sell eggs to friends, co workers, etc. I am in Utica- sounds like you are near me in the Valley??

I just finally (for good) learned the hard way that my chickens cannot free range anymore. A fox got my hen turkey this morning, dragged her into the filed and ate half of her carcass before I figured out why the guineas were carrying on!

I'm sooooooo upset, if I could've figured out what ammo went with what gun the fox would've been dead meat! Is it just me or is the fox problem getting worse?

A guy came to give me an estimate today on gutters and before he left I asked him if he was a hunter...he said yes so I asked him to load the shotgun with the shells for me after explaining to him why.....he started laughing and told me to just throw rocks if it came back and to do him a favor "Never buy ammo for your husband" with a smirk on his face I might add....apparently I brought out a black powder gun, then a 22 then an air rifle. How am I to know whats what? Guess I really need to start practicing! After he left I of course found the right shotgun Grrrrr I hope that darn fox comes back after my husband gets home!

On a positive note my 3 broodies are hard at work on their eggs and it looks like I have a fourth starting up now too!
