NY chicken lover!!!!

Oh my goodness it's chick city here. Still not done hatching but I had to pull the ones that have hatched so far. There are 3 eggs and 1 silky that I know won't hatch left in the bator. 2 have pips so they can stay. tomorrow is techniquely day 21 anyhow. If you don't count 3/4 as the start date. They were set at 4:10pm so i didn't count that day.

So far it' looks like 8 rir and 3 silky and some del/ee crosses and some dels. and one Blue orp. The three left are from AL as is the silky. I can still hope they hatch though. That means 3 or 4 days to complete the hatch. OMG.

Now I still haven't heard from patty so that means there are 25 orp also in this room. Lord have mercy you'd think I was running a chick daycare center, what with all these chicks. This room is 80* and it's hot.

Happy nice looking chicks. Have 2 from hinkjc. Buffs that is. Never thought I'd say this but I hope one is a roo. I had hoped for more blues from AL but unless one of the ones not hatched is blue, I'll only have the one, whatever sex it is.

I am double dog tired.

Take care

Rancher....you are definitely a chick magnet and addict! They must hear your voice and through the grapevine and all end up hatching at your house, Tgrlilies or MuggsMagees!

Just kidding, congratulations on the super great hatches....you know I think you all may be right about the silkies....they really do have a "look" and way of acting that is just different than other chicks.....hmmmm.

Well hatching is going off pretty decent here - last couple of days have been a snowstorm with a tornado just about. Lost my big St Bernard to Cancer, came across an accident where a chick (person) rolled her car upside down and was one of the first three people there-had to hold her neck while they strapped her to the board and cervical collared....then to appts. All the while it was like popcorn at the incubators...went to bed one hatched, got up a couple hours later another trying, couple of pips. Got up during the morning and my daughter goes oh look ones hatched - I was like I know and when I looked I told my daughter she might want to look again, there were four looking up at us like ummmm hi? Silkies didn't do so great in my other hatching - oh so very sad and my one incubator has slowed down but the one day we had 2 BR, 1 MFD, 5 SSH, 3 SS (of which one was very small and just didn't survive past day 2) and one I can't read the breeders writing but it is GORGEOUS i think it is a Partridge Cochin. The egg had POA - E or C on it. BIG baby. The incubator is quiet now but I think that since I am now at around day 22 that I will have another round shortly.

On a last note, I am concerned about my 2 Silver Phoenix - they have started sneezing so I brought them up to another brooder area where it is warmer and put them on Sav A Chick again. They have already been on medicated feed and a nice clean area. They have picked up since I brought them up but since they are near the new chicks - will they possibly give it to them? Whatever them might be???? No snottiness just a soft little sneeze everyonce in a while. They are definitely eating and drinking though and no heavy breathing so maybe it is just the new pine shavings????

Happy Hatching and I'm am now officially putting out my APB on Spring. BTW, whoever wrote about the chickens being mad about the recent snow you were so NOT joking - my three pens were all Cranky and unhappy!

I anyone is interested in a mixed Roo or two in Buff Orpington x Jersey Giant Cross (I think) let me know - they look like they came out of an old fashioned painting - GORGEOUS.

Well I took the last RIR out of the bator and candled the silky, afraid it would burst. It was a quitter so I tossed it. Can't have a burst egg with the turner. It would be hard enough to clean. Still no word on the two with pips but I keep checking. You never know. One minute nothing and then another a chick looking at you with the "I thought I'd never get out this thing. Easy on the calcium K?"

I so want to candle the one with no pip but I've opened the bator enough for today I think.

The silkies look weird. One is blk with a poof on it's head. Very weird. The other two lighter. One a porcelain so I'm told. Can't mistake the RIR's and the Blue Orp. It's been a productive day where chicks are concerned.

So far out of 23 eggs good after candleing 19 hatched. Not to bad I think. I just hope Trylin is up for some RIRs'. I only got them cuz I knew her and her DH likes them. There are eight so I think I can share some. I know she'll read this and go.

We had an accident happen here too, last night. Car slid into the stop sign acrossed the street. Didn't see an ambulance so apparently no one got hurt.

Got the new Back Yard Poultry magazine today.

Take care and have a good night everyone I got reading to do.

Rancher.

My recent black Silkie was born all with the big pouf on his head already the others that I kept had theirs too but they kept them a little less "hi there" when they were born.

I bet they may not have needed the ambulance but I bet they needed new undies after that - glad they were okay!

I'm Jealous! I don't have my new BY Poultry yet! I guess I'll have to go out and buy it or keep hopping around like a kid at Christmas (wait, I still do that.....)

I took someone's info - think it was you Rancher and took one of my incubators that has slowed down - keeping it closed but even with all the water in there and no holes it isn't going above 54 percent so I took it into the bathroom and steamed up the shower - humidity read 79 percent when I brought it back out and now it's around 72 percent 15 minutes later so hopefully that should help with hatching - going to do the other bater which goes into lockdown today since I can only get it to around 48 percent right now. House is very warm but a bit dry so I put the humidifier on. Will also give it a try for my duck and geese eggies - they are due anytime within the next week or so....

BTW, I am going to be the proud new owner of a pair of Pycnheons named Tony and Cleo - around a year or less but the gal has to cut down her flock - I believe she said they came from hinksjc....feeling pretty lucky if that is so....YAY

Love RIR's dependable layers and very calm - we just sold our older girls a couple months ago to someone starting out their first flock - miss them gals. May have to get more but not sure....just need to work on what I have going but do want to add a couple more Bantam Cochins to my little project - falling in love with them!

They got out of their run today and Samson the mottled Roo just let me walk up to him, pick him up and pet him. Of course his gal Sophie acted like it was a scene from a car chase and kept going back and forth between my husband and I.

A Disclaimer here - Samson is NOT ALWAYS so charming - I have picked him up before on a cranky day and he has spurred me and bit me which hurts but makes me laught cause it's not like one of my big birds doing it (who know better than to try...)

BTW,
I also have a gorgeous Barred Rock Rooster named Elvis who will need a new home. He is gorgeous and to our knowledge purebred - we ordered him last year through our Agway (first run in raising chickens.... oh how little we knew....) He and his egg buddy JP have decided that it's time to fight over the girls - last fall and through the Winter never an issue now all the sudden it's whose top Roo.

So if anyone would like a gorgeous BR Roo let me know. I'll post a photo if anyone is interested.

Have a great night - sorry for the usual Saga!

Update another hatch. Looks to be a RIR too. I was kinda hoping for more Blue orps. There is still another egg hatching and it might be Blue. Not sure it will even hatch. That leaves just the one that has no pips but then again I've had some with no pips that all of the sudden They hatch and there they are.

I hope it hurries cuz the incu stinks. Should be done by tomorrow.

Finally heard from Patty. Lord have mercy, I will never do this again.

So I'm up to 20/23. Not bad at all.

Excellent hatch! The silkie babies don't look like regular chicks... they're an acquired taste! LOL
I may have some BBS Orps hatch next weekend... they carry the lavender gene. Not my thing, but they came with some other Project Orp eggs I just had to have! Maybe Trish will share them -- gave her first dibs.

I have 73 eggs in lockdown! I must have totally lost my mind.
roll.png
I know... you knew that already! I put 24 in the LG.... 4 white over blue & black silkies to check if the cockerel is dominant white. 8 White over wheaten Ameraucanas. He's supposed to carry barring, so this may be the start of a project or may just be cheap chicks for sale! The last dozen are split Orps. Some of them are monstrously huge... like that had to HURT huge! In the sportsman hatching tray are lav & split Ameraucanas, lav orps, 7 dorkings and a whole bunch of BBS silkie eggs. If they all hatch, I'll faint!
th.gif
I have to raise the humidity in the room... can't get the LG above 55% and it's the only thing I haven't tried. Of course, the sportsman is holding steady at 100 degrees with 70% humidity.

You all are amazing...when I grow up to be a real chicken person I want to be like you guys! (Maybe without all the hatching though...I think my husband would kill me after all the eggs I just did and if I tried it again...)

I have so many questions about splits, and white over blue and such things....is there a book or something that explains all these terms? I would love to understand them - I will never be quite the afficianado that you all are but I would like to seem like I'm not talking out my you know what - I like to be halfway smart!

Congratulations again on all the great hatchings you guys are having!

BTW Tgrlily, the guy in Malta selling the Yohokama Red Shaddle eggs on ebay had his ability to sell them pulled from ebay. I just thought you would like to know that!

Congrats Rancher and Tigrlily on your hatches. I have 10 silky eggs going in lockdown on wednesday. I hope they all hatch. Mumbles, my lone silkie chick, needs to know she is a silkie and not a human! She spends so much time with me that she thinks shes human. Ever try to drink a cup of coffee with a rambunctious chick on your lap?

Snow melted some yesterday and my girls came out of the tractor (in desperation I think!). They are still mad but are willing to accept bribes to feel better. I got 8 eggs yesterday so they must be forgiving me somewhat. Now we are in the cold. Butchering class tomorrow and we are doing 20 or so chickens. Looking forward to learning lots. Everyone have a great day!

Renee - you will have your hands full for sure.

Frye - I've sent you the article on hatching right?

mad - Where are you taking butchering classes? Sound like something I need.

Final count is 10 RIR, 3 silky, (if my family doesn't leave them alone i swear I'll kill them) 1 Blue orp, 2 Del, and 5 crosses. So 21/23. The last large eggs was a quitter. I candled since today would technically be 21. So they def. started very early.

Heard from patty she should come and get her chicks tomorrow. I won't do this again.

So since I only have the one blue what can I do to get more other than buy more eggs. I'm too tired and I've got eggs coming on mon. or tues or wed or sometime.

Gotta go babysitting the queen

Rancher
