NY chicken lover!!!!

Happy Mother's Day to all you chick mommas and people mommas too.

The 5 silkies are still going strong. 2 of them play at "bump chests" sometimes. I hope they are both roos and that is ALL the roos I have in the bunch. They are 2 of the smallest ones, which doesn't make sense for roos, but then NOTHING makes sense to me when it comes to silkies.

Annie's 4 are escape artist. The little Peach colored one I am calling Houdini and the chimpmonk one is the Assistant. The little yellow ones are NORMAL CHICKS....but they are the only 2 normal ones I have. And one of them is a roo. Looks like I am gonna have a lot of roo stew this fall.

Boldie Hawn is the first to try everything. First out the pop door in the morning, first out the people door to free range in the afternoon. Sometimes the ONLY one out to free range. Today she ran down the ramp, grabbed a piece of greenery and jumped back in the door and gave the leaf to another hen. She thinks she is a roo too. Must be something in the air this time of year.

I am getting one or two eggs a day. One of them was even in the nest box. Of course I put the nest box right where I always find the eggs. LOL...but if it works, who can blame me?
Ray made the nest boxes so they hang on 2 screws on the wall. That way I can move them if someone goes broody in one of them OR move them to where the eggs are being laid.

Just got back today from a five day C.E. trip. Soo, when I checked the broody hen...

All Three Eggs Hatched and there are 3 chicks under the hen!

They are all ameraucanas from Beekman Farm. Will post pic when Miss Doris lets me take one.

Tigrlilly: The Ameraucanas are very funny birds. They make all sorts of songbird noises. They look like little raptors still. They are starting to calm down a little.

Fyrekitten: How are you? How did surgery go? When do you have to move?

Rancher: Sorry to hear about your BR's. They are such pretty birds. How is the BR/EE cross that you posted on the Ameraucana thread?

Sue: How was the event Saturday? Would have gone, but was out of town.

Happy Mother's Day everyone!

Happy Mothers's Day Doris!

Hmmmm... Do you use vitamins in the water? Mine get vitamin water till they move outside. I buy the 8oz Durvet Vitamin & Electrolyte powder from TSC - about 1/4tsp in a quart. By the time they're on gallon waterers I only use 1/2 tsp per gallon. I don't use medicated feed. Go ahead -- call me a new-age hippie freak! I know you want to!!

It's ok, it's probably true.

At any rate, I've had a few Dorkings from shipped eggs hatch out with curled toes the last 2 hatches. I added a dropperful of B Complex liquid vitamins to the waterer & put a few drops on the beak once or twice a day. The chick's toes from the previous hatch fixed themselves with no bandaid orthopedic shoe & I was unable to tell her from her sisters by the third day. I just treated the new chick this morning, so I'll know if it works in a few days. Had a weak silkie this morning too, and it got the same vitamin treatment. I can't tell which chick it was now. Honestly, I half expected it to be dead when I got home from work.

Renee....is that something (the curled toes) that can be helped by what is fed to the parent stock? I've got that slw trio and one chick that has hatched (the only..so far

) has the curled toes. Just the outside ones are a bit curled, the chick is now two weeks old-is it too late to try the b-complex drops? Also, if I put the parents on breeder pellets...would that work? Or add some manna pro to their diet? Just trying to keep these guys as well fed and healthy as possible! Thanks...and congratulations ms. VP!!

Ok, before we all go out & buy Manna Pro -- I did go to TSC & compare the label to the Agway Gamebird Starter I use. I'm pretty sure I did this 2 years ago too, when I was looking for a high protein supplement for show conditioning. I am a total freak about researching before I do something. The differences in nutritional values are all in favor of the Agway product. Protein is 1% higher as are all the other listed values. The agway product has vitamin supplements added that Manna Pro does not, including B 12. The only thing higher with the Manna Pro is the pricetag --- and that's considerably higher.

My adult birds get Egg Producer pellets which have 21% protein. I used to use regular Layer Pellets & supplement with the 26% for show conditioning. This year I plan on adding the higher protein as well. If you want to add vitamin/electrolyte to the waterers, an easy way is to pre-mix a gallon with a concentrated solution and add a splash to the waterers. I'm planning on testing this with the Dorkings to see if it improves hatchability... I'll let you know in a few weeks!

Ameraucanas are strange creatures -- probably why I like them! They look like hawks or owls to me, too. You think they're making funny sounds now? Their egg song is hysterical and just wait till you hear one crow!!!!!

Happy Mother's Day!!!

I enjoyed the swap on saturday even though the buyer turnout wasn't that great. My girls loved playing with the other kids. Fiona woke up this morning and said "I want to go to the chicken show again mommy"

Mother's Day was going good at the Rochester zoo until we got a call that our fence was down and the horses were loose. Someone called the cops and 911. We received 6 calls telling us they were loose and that was it. I freaked. We're 2 hours away and I know they're scared from being chased by strangers. To top it off a neighbor I've never met was trash talking us to the sheriff. She said we don't take care of our animals because they were covered it burdock. The sheriff told my parents that if my horses get out again we can be sued and that we will probably be ticketed. They're going to check with our vet and farrier.

It bothers me that people judge you and haven't taken the time to know you. The neighbor has 2 horses so they know everything there is know. (sarcasm) My horses were in heat and I'm sure that was part of the problem.

The second half of Mother's Day was a nightmare. We left for home immediately, didn't stop to eat or anything. By the end of the night I was sick.

Days like that just plain suck. Especially so on a supposed "special" day. I am sorry.

Hello, NYers!

I am brand new to keeping chickens! I have wanted them for a couple years, and will finally be bringing 2 little ladies home this week. I am in southern Dutchess County... I'm not exactly "allowed" to have my ladies, legally, but we're going to take the plunge anyway. As hubby says, "You only live once, if you want a couple of chickens, you should get a couple of chickens!" Bless his heart... I am beyond excited!

I was at the Swap on Saturday. There was a fair amount of things there, and the variety was good. I did not find anything I was looking for, but my travel companion did pick up a nice little trio.

Sorry that your Sunday turned out so badly. It aggravates me when people are like that. I hope that things turn well for you.
