NY chicken lover!!!!

What if you made a "hover" basically a wooden box that you hang a bit off the floor so that if the chicks go under it so it contains their body heat. I've seen it with and without a light bulb for heat. I think at this time of year it's warm enough for older chicks to use one of these as long as your coop has no drafts.

That's a great idea. I already have a wooden box, could just nail it to the wall. I have no way to get power to the coop. That was done on purpose so I wouldn't be tempted to run a light out there in the winter. However I did make the coop so draft proof that I have to open a window when the sun shines. It gets HOT in there, even in THIS weather, but only when the sun shines, so it hasn't been a problem yet. LOL

Breeder just emailed me that 2 of the breeds I am getting from her are already out in the "pen" with the big girls....so it might not be as big a problem as I thought. However I am getting 2 different ages (breeds too) from her. The youngest won't even be a week old when I get them. FLUFFY BUTTS again. LOOOOVE IT.

So my flock will be very mixed. D'uccles, mutts, silkies, marens, OE's and Amerucanas. I can't wait for eggs. Should have the whole flock laying by mid September.(except the silkies, cuz they are just for broody purposes so I don't care if they EVER lay) My Roo is gonna be an Olive Egger so any babies I hatch will lay colored eggs. I AM SOOOO EXCITED!!!!

I am selling my Bantam Blue Cochin Roo, Little Boy Blue. Here is a link to the auction. He really is a great little guy, just has a bit of a "Napoleon" complex.

I am willing to meet someone within a reasonable distance.

Does anyone have any turkey hatching eggs locally to Syracuse or surrounding to sell?

I picked up 4 today but really wanted to put at least 6-8 in incubator.

My big cochin roo would probably try to eat him, so I can't take him (not that I need another roo LOL), but I wanted to say that he's really pretty!!

I hope he finds a good home.

I need the sun to come out

I christened it Fort Chicken. The walls are 4x4's, the top is hardware cloth on 2x4 frames, and it's 8'x9'. There is a heat matt under the bedding in one corner. Currently occupied by 8 LF, a frizzle cochin bantam and 5 silkies. They are having a great time in it, chicken zoomies

And they're out of the house!!!!!
The coop has made no progress, between the weather and DH working many hours.. I wanted to ask where you all found the best prices on hardware cloth and welded wire fencing in CNY?
Going to need a bailer for the lawn soon, sigh...

I think we might need a bailer also lol...

We are planning on getting a shed/coop set up next week when my dh gets home for our 8wk old silkies, and 11 wk old splash orp's. oh and the turkeys I have in the incubator...

I wish the rain would stop also!

Me too. He is currently bunking with the 8 week olds. He really is a good little guy. Nice to them, hens and people. AND, he's handsome. What more could someone want?

Instead of a coop, I should have built a chicken ark. Soooo much rain! My big girls are okay with going out and hiding under the tractor until it lets up some. My silkie kids are not happy locked into their coop. Since they are only 10 and 14 weeks old, I am erring on the side of caution and keeping them in. I have pond in my back yard. I was hoping to start on another silkie coop this week but the weather is not cooperating. Good thing the babies are still little and enjoying the brooder box.
I have a question though--What would be the ideal size coop for 6 silkies? I am hemming and hawing over the size. I have 6 right now in the 3x3 (they are the above mentioned in lockdown) but will be moving the 3 boys on to new homes (unless I keep one for breeding!). That would leave 3 in there. Of the 5 babies in the brooder, I am not sure yet how many are boys. I am hoping the majority are girls. The boys will also be moving on. I dont want to breed brother/sister. Oh-I did build a 6x4 run for the little coop so I think thats enough room as I move both every other day and will be leaving the door to the run open during the day.

Heres hoping that everyone stays dry and their cheeps are healthy and happy!

I think thats what my husband is afraid of! He doesnt consider silkies as real chickens. He says they have no purpose. I told him their purpose is to be my pets and broodies. He just looked at me. I love my silkies and my big girls. Cant wait to get javas nest spring. He considers them to be "real" chickens.
