What if you made a "hover" basically a wooden box that you hang a bit off the floor so that if the chicks go under it so it contains their body heat. I've seen it with and without a light bulb for heat. I think at this time of year it's warm enough for older chicks to use one of these as long as your coop has no drafts.
That's a great idea. I already have a wooden box, could just nail it to the wall. I have no way to get power to the coop. That was done on purpose so I wouldn't be tempted to run a light out there in the winter. However I did make the coop so draft proof that I have to open a window when the sun shines. It gets HOT in there, even in THIS weather, but only when the sun shines, so it hasn't been a problem yet. LOL
Breeder just emailed me that 2 of the breeds I am getting from her are already out in the "pen" with the big girls....so it might not be as big a problem as I thought. However I am getting 2 different ages (breeds too) from her. The youngest won't even be a week old when I get them. FLUFFY BUTTS again. LOOOOVE IT.
So my flock will be very mixed. D'uccles, mutts, silkies, marens, OE's and Amerucanas. I can't wait for eggs. Should have the whole flock laying by mid September.(except the silkies, cuz they are just for broody purposes so I don't care if they EVER lay) My Roo is gonna be an Olive Egger so any babies I hatch will lay colored eggs. I AM SOOOO EXCITED!!!!
