Came inside - it is sooo hot out there in the sun! I now have to wait for the shade to hit the part of the pen I have to work on next.

Keep cool!

Well I did get the plywood for the floor of my two new hoop coops. And we just finished replacing the old stockade fencing and I've been working on the yard where the chickens run. I'm going to plant ornamental grasses along the fence but will have to put a wire fence to keep them from digging it out. Hopefully it will provide them with shade.

Because the leach field is near by I can't plant shrubs but you can. If you surround the base with 2' fencing to protect the roots it should hang over and proved them with shade. At least with the right shrub any how.

Went to the regional market and gave my card to a couple that were there and DON'T have chickens yet. Lord have mercy , chickens are much easier to deal with than cats and dogs IMO. If you can control the urge to get 70. Unlike Moi. But a nice variety of colors in Orpingtons would be nice. Let see there are Black, buff, white, blue and lavender. I have these ones. Well not the blue but a splash hen and hopefully she'll start laying soon and I can stick her with one of the black roos. But I have buff roo and hens, lav roo and hens, wht roo and hens. Only got blk roos and a splash hen. Not to mention the rarer colors. Jubilee, chocolate, lemon cuckoo and any I can't think of. I don't have these yet. But Orpingtons look so nice in the yard don't they.

I had offered tgrlily the op to come and have a look and put her two cents in before I breed them but she must be busy cuz she hasn't taken me up on the offer. Yet? In fact she hasn't been on in a while. I hope she and hers are ok.

Take care and stay cool.

Hi Rancher!

We put 130 feet of chain link on our board fence today. Buried it too. I am sooooo sore. Only 65 more feet to go.

We have trees around three sides of the outdoor pen we are preparing. The other outdoor pen has a roof and also trees on two sides and the coop on the other. I did however, love your idea of growing hedges as fences. I may have to experiment with that. I love anything dual purpose, especially if it can feed me.

It will be so nice to get it done and get our 25 hatchery birds out there. They are getting crowded in the bin.

Wish I could see a pic of your hoop coop. My Orpington Roo needs to give the new coop to the little ladies until they are big enough to be out with him. He needs a chicken tractor until probably September or October. He is a big buff boy - oh soooo handsome.

Tgrlilly: The prettiest white boy is pulling tail feathers out of everyone. I clipped his beak back a little, but he still manages to continue. The reason he is the prettiest is that no one is pulling HIS tail feathers out. I will try clipping him back a little more - hopfully it will work. The girls really want to look pretty and the other roos want the girls to stop laughing at thier sad one or two feather tails! I will point out that feather pulling is his only fault so far. He is good with people. They all are.

Finally finished my cooplex...duplex coop made from a 4x4x8 shipping crate. Would have finished the run, but by the time I referee-ed the kids fixing supper for me, the mosquitoes were too numerous and ravenous and my bug spray had been sweated off (no pun intended). Hope to finish the runs tomorrow after church. Kids fixing supper again tomorrow, so...maybe not so much time to work.

Fast growing shrubs/bushes for quick shade.....that can be pruned in any shape are Rose of Sharon. I adore these hardy shrubs and my yard will be filled with them next year. they don't overwhelm or grow huge.....are fast growing ......and purdy to boot.

I am in zone 7 but thinlk they can go up to zone 9. I could even collect and send free seeds from mine if anyone wants to just pay postage for them. A line of these wpuld be nice summer shade for lower height coo[ps for sure.
