NY chicken lover!!!!

I am sorry for your loss. I too have some I put the cart before the horse with. That's the thing with chickens. They're just to easy to acquire and before the coop or arrangements for housing are in place. I do hope you have a better time finding buyers than I'm having. Right now I have posted two Orp roos from hinkjc farms and not takers. These are nice big guys too.

Look on the bright side you can start again after you have all the protection in place. Lord have mercy I'm always giving chicks away each year or at the very least selling them cheap. Just remember no matter what you do your going to have to fight the vermin anyway. Make sure you have a plan whether trap , shoot or prevention.

Take care and I wish you the best,

rancher

I have coops and such, they're just really really redneck versions and totally NOT predator proof. So I've had some losses IN the coops, plus the stuff that went mia from free ranging. My husband is just not getting the whole thing, doesn't understand why I would want to pay for feed for all that stuff, why was I even bothering since I was never going to make any money, so I said fine, its all gone then. Then he said I was "overreacting" and I should just keep a couple things... If I had to wait for him to improve something heck may freeze over! He says well just leave them in the coop, and I said well, its not going to keep out a thing. He doesn't see breeding stock out there, just random chickens and ducks...

And I am tired of the ducks stealing the rabbit food and the chickens escaping from the pen and roosting in the rabbitry...

Is there a Kelly blue book for boats? LOL I'm going to sell the boat I think, don't think I would get much for it tho, its ancient. When my brother got married like 8 years ago he got land with trees he's farmed (twice) that they put up their MH on and I got a 15yo fishing boat. Yeah, I thought that was fair too. We never ever use it.

At least you can eat your Roos, not much meat on Runner ducks! :O I don't know why they won't stay in the yard, everything else does. Of course, there is a LOT of really high grass that never got mowed this spring (anyone got a bush hog thing I can borrow?) so it makes great predator camoflauge!

I did get a couple CL responses, one I deleted as "odd" since it didn't specifially mention anything and the other sounds like a bored local mom with kids who wants to come "tour"? Ummm, no? Its hot, there's poop, nuf said. Tell me what ya want and I will go catch it for you... I mean its "cleanish" out there, but I have rabbits and well, rabbits poop. A LOT. The duck coop needs mucking too, because I can't let them out, its 95 out and I'm probably NOT supposed to be shoveling duck poop... Besides, I don't need your kids chasing my ducks or poking my rabbits or wanting to go into the garage or hoop house to look at stuff. (I hate "wanderers")

Of course, the heat and the pregnancy hormones *might* be making me a touch mental, but I haven't killed anyone yet, so its all good!

But thanks for the thoughts, I'm just having a bad week with the heat, putting the kitty down, stuff going MIA, stuff dropping dead, pregnancy and the bills. My husband has a knack for making stuff worse rather than better.

congrats sachasmom, I just had a little boy 10 weeks ago.
If you think you are hormonal now, just wait! Sorry to hear about your coop/chicken situation. It's so darn hot we all might be a few birds shorter come the end of the week...hopefully just roos are lost. I got COLD hearty breeds...thought I lived in a cool climate

Stay cool all!
now, which house fan to give up for the coop tomorrow? DH will not be happy about giving up a fan, but he secretly loves the chickens too and should understand

Well, finally dispatched one of those nasty ring-tailed assassins who have been invading our property. Two more to go (that I know about). Now, if only that fox would stop by again.

I might be interested in your Silver Fox rabbits ( I would need to convince DH). Do you have blue and black?

Its 90 with 82 percent humidity outside. My poor broody is still sitting. I gave her a drink off my fingers but shes standing right now. Wet down the others who were outside and you know its hot when instead of running away from the water they casually stroll out of the stream. Wet down the run good and wet down the silkies run too. Gave everyone some goodies and ran back inside. Whole thing took 20 minutes and I am overheated. Have the ac on as well as 2 fans. I hope I dont lose any birds and that nobody else does either. My hens are barely laying with this heat.

Best part of yesterday was when the loudspeaker comes on at work and they announce to the guests that to save energy and be greener, they were shutting off the ac and most of the lights in the store for an hour. I work in an area that is recessed and has no air except for the fans we have. We wanted to die. If they do that while Im there tomorrow or friday(calling for heat index of 110), they may be calling me an ambulance.

Greymane--happy to see you got the thief and I hope you get the others.

Sachasmom--your entitled to crab. You have a munchking hanging off your insides in this weather! Sorry to hear about all your bad luck. I do hope things improve for you.

Tim, are your Orp roos lavendar or split black?

I'm still looking for Coronation Sussex pullets and Lav Orp pullets.

Yikes! I can't believe they turned off the a/c on you. I was at work today and we had it blazing. I got home and thankfully all my girls are fine (and a few boys). I let them out to free range when it's hot and they were all huddled under the bushes. I splatted a cold watermelon on my driveway, started up the sprinkler and all seem ok for the moment. Tomorrow's going to be a scorcher so I may run out and pick up another fan, plus I have 2L bottles already freezing. Told the driveway sealer guy not to bother coming, as I can't lock up the chickens.

I got hmm.. 15 eggs today. Not bad, considering my max is usually around 18. I have 23 hens, but some are new layers.

OH, if anyone near me needs eggs, let me know. I have 25 dozen in my fridge since I haven't been able to sell them at work (summer vacation). Rofl!

Ever see a chicken jump up and grab the treat bowl? Neither had I, until today. One of the OE Roos knows what "watermelon" means and jumped up, grabbed the edge of the bowl and spilled it all over the ground. I just backed away and let them have it. WOW. Who knew chickens understood english?

I have 10 eggs in the fridge. Took 5 days to get them, but things are looking up. I just can't wait for the LF to start laying. I am SOOOO tired of cracking 2 - 3 eggs for each ONE the recipe calls for. (But those darn D'uccles are soooo cute I have to keep them.)

Ray thought that the momma hen wanted out of her enclosure. You know the one she and the babies are safe from everyone else in? Well, doesn't one of the chicks run UNDER the coop, just like I said it would. I made him get it out. Sheesh. They are only 2 weeks old and cute as all get out...but they still fit UNDER the coop....and nothing else does, so you can't get them back out.
Took him a while, but he got it out. Then I had to catch it and put it back with a VERY aggitated momma hen. I think we'll wait until he has put up something to keep the chicks from under the coop before we do THAT again.

Sitting in front of the AC wondering what the free ranging psycho chickens are doing out in the heat. Hope everyone is keeping cool.

Ye gods and little fishies, that's one of the dumbest store policies I've heard in ages. "Attention, shoppers - enjoy sweating in the near-darkness for the next hour!" Yikes.
