Sorry, Barn Swallow, I'm not familiar with that area of the state. But I hope you find just what you are looking for in your new home.
OK, I don't know where I should post this question, so redirect me if I need it. I thought of starting a new thread in this forum, but it looks to me like the forum is pretty well organized into just one thread per state/non-US country or area. And I don't really think it belongs in the Buyers forum, as I'm not shopping at the moment (except in the sense that all of us are never immune to the right price for the right bird).
I want to know where the breeders and farms are. In particular, I have a friend looking for a white runner duck (female), and I'll probably want ducks someday and am vaguely mulling over Cayugas and Runners. Now that I love my Americanaunas, who are probably better categorized as EEs, I am starting to ponder obtaining--eventually--carefully bred Americaunas. And looking at the hatchery catalogs and web pages from breeders on the west coast is very exciting...but...isn't anyone around here raising these birds? I mean, I can drive from here (I'm just south of Rochester) to Cayuga lake in an easy afternoon. Why on earth should I have to have Cayuga ducks shipped from Oregon?
So this is my invitation to you New York bird lovers to share what you know about local sources--even if they aren't local to me in particular, because probably someone in your area wants to know how to "buy local" too. Where did you get your birds? Do you breed and/or sell stock, and what breeds if you do? I don't mean to draw particular offers away from the appropriate forums; you know where the actual "birds/eggs for sale" posts go. I mean if you are a breeder or know one, let us know the whos, whats, and wheres.
I bought my birds from
Nature Berry farm in Macedon. My birds were healthy, and I could return the one that turned out to be a rooster (if I could bear to say goodbye to his sweet face!). It's a nice family business, and birds there look to me to be living a good life. Most of the stock is not bred there, though. I believe they do breed their own hybrids (Golden Comets and Black Queens) about which I have heard good things.
