NY chicken lover!!!!

Mad - You've seen my hoop coop right? Cheap and easy. I'm amazed they aren't chickensicles in there but they seem ok. I'm the one who stresses all night. Of course I have no idea when they'll start to lay eggs, but if they survive the winter I can wait.

No snow here and that means no snowblowing. Can't complain about that except that it has to be warmer to snow than freeze. It got real windy and blew some heavy things around and I'm worried for the trees out back. One is over the hoop coop and if it falls I expect it will killl them all. Now to mention ruin the hoop coop beyond repair. I have no chain saw and the thing is at least 50 feet. Ideally I need money to pay someone to come and cut the darn things down.

Well take care, gotta work to move the new chicks to bigger digs.

Rancher

Rancher--already had that happen when Irene came through. Big branch just missed the tractor and run but we had 5 trees that snapped and leaned in the back yard, including part of a massive oak tree that is next to the woods coop we started. My dh was crazy enough to go out and do the "suicide cuts" to get them down, except for the oak. This thing is massive and his little chainsaws are no match for this thing. We do have to drop it before continuing building as it is right next to the foundation pillars of the new coop. He is still figuring out how to do that. I swear he likes the adrenalin rush of almost killing himself dropping trees. Too bad pine couldnt be used for woodstoves cause I would clearcut my whole acre!

I have seen your hoopcoop and it is cool (no pun intended!). I may attempt one this summer, depending on how quick we get the woods coop done. We want to expand as we have more customers than eggs right now (actually, no eggs right now). I have caught morehens disease and I hear there is no cure for this.

Hope the cold isnt bothering your joints too badly. Have a great day!

Orps are such pretty fluff butts. I have been working on a project for fun with them. I've put a straight comb BLRW roo over a blue orp hen. The female offspring have been blue and black, only 1 splash. I kept 1 male that had color come through and when he feathered out he had lacing with a poofy butt. I sold him this fall though because I had too many roos. Next I want to put the father over the daughters to see the color results.
edited to add a thought I forgot.
Rancher it's too bad your orps weren't blue. Still tempting but DH looked at me like I was crazy because of all our ongoing chicken projects.

Wow - two eggs today, folks! Much better than 0 yesterday.

Today, I tried a bribe.

I mixed on the stove:

Milk
Water
Dried Oatmeal
Dried Polenta (corn grits)
Strawberry Jam

When it was heated to a nice thick mash, I let it cool a little and then brought it out to the girls. It was mayhen. Mash was flying everywhere and all I heard were gurgled "cluck cluck clucks." Each bird jostled for position. They argued too much over the main dish, so I took my spoon and gave them individual bites.... all except for my SLW, Winona, who has always been extremely anti-social. Sheesh.

While they were eating, I explained to them that they could get treats like that more often if they would give me some eggs. I'm quite sure we're going to have 10 for 10 tomorrow.

On another note - I find it quite adorable that when I go inside the quail coop, everyone runs to the outside while the head roo comes charging in at me. I always say to him "Really? Whaddya gonna do???" and I lift him up and place him on the outside of his wall. Pretty soon, his backup roo comes charging in with him and they both try to intimidate me. It's really quite cute.

I'm surviving though I must confess there was a day I would have hopped a train to AL in a heart beat.

I have 6 hens, one is sick and not laying anyhow, and I've been getting 4 eggs per day which is pretty good! If anyone needs eating eggs because their hens aren't laying and you're in my area please let me know.

I hate the thought of anyone buying them from the grocery store.
