NY chicken lover!!!!

Hey Aria! As Cass said, you can keep more than one breed. I have silkies in one coop and 8 large fowl hens in another coop. I have one silkie roo and he is with the little girls. He doesnt even try and make a move on the big girls. They pretty much ignore the little ones anyways when they are all out freeranging. I am getting more of each in the spring. Since I will probably end up with a big rooster, I will be fencing an area for the silkies that will let them freerange without harrassment from him. Chickens are a learning process and it seems like there is always another breed or type that I want! Enjoy your silkies and good luck with your hatching. I will be test hatching some of my silkie eggs in a couple of months.

Are you thinking ducklings or adults? A friend has a pr of runners..male is fawn...female can be fawn and white or a darker color...just saying..
LOVE ducks. Besides 70 ish chickens we have Pekins. Incredible simply delish eggs that are huge. And they are so easy. No pecking, fighting. Fun to watch too. Need more female ducks. Egg layers tho. Thinking Indian Runners. I may hatch a few Pekin eggs next time I load the bator, just to have some ducks to live with chickens. Maybe I just need 2 or 3 bators...

Hello Everyone,

I hope you all stayed warm on Saturday, and that all hatches, Chickens are doing well.

A question for you all. I finished my first hatch, and while I did not do as well as I had hoped, I did hatch out 20 chicks (out of 33 eggs). Most of the eggs that quit seem to have quit about day 16-17. Some had a white substance under the membrane that I would describe as looking like infection. 2 chicks look to fully develop and did not hatch. The incubator was cleaned before use. Has anyone had something like that.

Lessons learned from hatch 1,

Wait longer before opening the incubator, and not as often. I opened it once in the first 24, and twice in the second.

The wife loves the process as much as I do. She dislikes the chickens, but loves the chicks incubating, as long as I do all the cleaning.

The next batch is in (day 6) and were all separated/marked, so I should get a good Idea about who is doing their job and who is not. This hatch told me a lot. RIR, BLRW, Orps(Blue/Black) and Giants. All but one chick is B/B/S. So I would same the blue Orp Rooster did most of the breeding.

Anyone know what a BLRW Black/blue orp cross would look like as a chick?

Just found this thread! Instead of typing everything all over again, here is a link to what is going on South East of Buffalo NY (30 minutes out) and about 50 minutes outside of Rochester
