NY chicken lover!!!!

Had to go to TSC to buy kitty litter (I use equine pine) and wow, chicks! I am surprised we have them so early. I was soooo tempted, but I'm already fretting about how to thin down the flock I have so I managed to go away without getting any. If anyone is interested, the TSC in Saratoga has red pullets, amberlink pullets and some sort of ducks (I forgot on those). Might have been one other type, but I didn't see those. I actually like that they are cordoned off this year - no little kids playing with the chickies.

What are you looking for?

Preferably Marans, or dual purpose (for meat/eggs) since I eat the roos I end up hatching. I have some Dels from you and I love them but I like diversity in the flock. Or other breeds that would sell good as pullets or chicks. My husband is doubting whether my hobby is cost effective, so in order to hatch I might have to sell some.

And does anyone know approx how long Speckled Sussex lay for? I have 3 that have stopped laying I think. They are 3-4 years old now (I don't use lights except first year in coop in winter).

Thanks so much for your help. Sadly, Willow Marsh Farms looks to be a 5 hour drive one way... eek.

I checked out all those links and it looks like the closest is Cassadaga and Colden... both of which is still 1.5 hour drive one way for us... with gas prices what they are, it's not something I can do on a regular basis for milk. :( I will keep searching...! I appreciate your help!

Congrats to all you hatchers! Spring must be getting close!

I could use some hatching eggs too, lol My incubator is empty and nothing is laying (bunch of freeloaders!) I'm looking for Silkies, Ameraucanas or Quail. Or Cayuga duck eggs. Or something fun? I need like three dozen eggs, lol Its gonna be warm *ish* next week so I could have them shipped, or I can run over and meet someone at the Canandaigua auction if you're coming, I may run over to shop, not sending anything bc I don't see me getting up early enough since the baby is keeping me up til the wee hours of the am!

I have an Ameraucana Roo to trade if anyone would like one, (Two actually) Both are some sort of funky ressesive color, one with red, one with blue. The Blue Roo just appeared last week, I am not sure WHERE it was for a couple months, so either a predator chased it across the road to the neighbors or they came over and helped themselves! Or someone dumped it, sigh. Like I needed an extra Rooster??? It just appeared and made itself at home!

I also have a funky colored Ameraucana hen too, $5 for her if you want it, it should be laying soon.

I also have like three Lionhead bunnies, free if anyone wants them, they're from a color project and I can't use them. Their Momma ate part of their ears, poor buns. :(

I just came home from our TSC, and also managed to resist the temptation - in fact, I was just logging in here to tell y'all that I stayed strong!

The new enclosed setup is great. The staff at my TSC is really excellent (rural folks who know livestock for the win!), and successfully kept the kiddies out of the babies last year, but they were still too "out in the open." It's good that they've chosen to remove the temptation this year

The woman who checked me out is a fellow chicken enthusiast who keeps a flock of thirty or so birds. She said they're all surprised and a bit dismayed that the chicks are there so early. She told me that they had one shipment come in today with a lot of losses, and they think that they were left someplace cold for too long during shipping. Poor babies.

The Schodack store has "assorted pullets" (all platinum blondes - probably White Leghorns and/or White Rocks), a whole horde of happy, active little red sexlink pullets (tempting!), straight-run Brown Leghorns (why, oh why did they have to be straight-run?), what looked like some Cornish X, and straight-run Pekin ducks. I so want ducks - I'm very close to setting up a brooder and going back to get all nine of those babies. DH has one of my "brooder totes" jammed full of his junk, but the other is available.

Unrelated to chickens, but related to temptations - Penzeys Spices has just opened a store in Albany, and Trader Joe's is on its way. My wallet is screaming in terror.
