NY chicken lover!!!!

I hear you Rancher. hatching is VERY distracting.

i have found with Hawks, of you run them off enough, they finally give up. At least that has been my experience.

I just set up the brooder. I can't count how many have hatched so far. 11 or 12? Hard to count them in the bator, plus when I look in, they FREAK out, making it harder to count them.
The saying"don't count your chickens before they hatch" was not said by a person who actually hatched chicks. They only way you can count them is before they hatch 'cause after that they move so fast you CAN"T count them!

Hi everyone!! I haven't posted on this thread in quite a bit!! Not sure if any of you saw my pictures from Hurricane Irene, but we lost everything. Every structure on our property was actually swept away by the water. None of our belongings survived, much less our chickens. :( A huge bummer since above all, I love my chickens like they were my kids, and second because they had only been in there new coop a few months, and most were just getting old enough to lay. So here I am, 6 months later, in a new home, with a new chicken coop under construction. I ordered chicks a few weeks ago because I simply couldn't wait anymore, and having them here just makes me happy! After talking with Cass (she bought some silkies off me last spring), she suggested I post here and see if anyone is interested in the "extra" chicks that I cannot keep from my order, and if anyone has any hens that are closeby, at a decent price.

The extras from my order are:
8 Partridge silkies
3 Light Brahmas
---They are all bantam straight run, and 3 weeks old today. I would be happy with $3 each, or $30 for all 11 of them.

As far as hens, I am not picky at all. I just like to keep a nice colorful flock. Would love a polish or 2, since my kids just love the way they look.

Anyway, I am in Northern Schoharie County, so if anyone is interested in my chicks, or has any hens for sale, please PM me. :)

I was also wondering, was anyone else on here affected by the Hurricane??

M2M, so sorry to hear of your loss.

Well I got a new hen today. Sussex, in a trade. So in math it's. If Rancher sold ten chicks and got one in trade how many chickens does he have? To many. That's the correct answer to any questions that involve how many chickens does he have.

Now I went out to the coop to let the BRs out since the weather was nice and I was going to work on the hoop coop and I go into the coop to chase out the Baldwin sisters who don't like to leave the coop and what do i see? You don't know do you?

A SNAKE!

Except that this Snake was half in and half out through the 1/2" hardware cloth and got STUCK!

Must be at least 24" long. I say must be cuz I tried to get it out with the rake but it wouldn't come out!

I tried to get it out but apparently I killed it with the rake and now it's hanging there half in and half out dead as a door nail.

Now I'm not afraid of snakes mind you but around here I don't know and I've had a couple rear up to strike, so a snake might as well give up the ghost if I see it. Unless it retreats and goes away. Otherwise it's dead meat.

Looks like you have a huge hoop coop in the background!!!! Is that filled with your chickens???

It has been over 1 day, and there is 14 chicks hatched, should I wait until tomorrow to open the bator (Tomorrow night)?

How many more eggs are there to hatch?

I wouldn't open it until the last had hatched or 2.5 days had passed from the first hatch. Chicks can live for 3 days without food. Can you slip a little water in for them to drink? And is there enough air ciculation ....14 chicks plus the eggs need a lot of O2.

Hey Rancher...doesnt that dead snake count as free chicken buffet? I am surprised your raptors werent all over it already!!! Sorry to hear about your arthritis. Looks like you are making progress on your coop though. We are starting the woods open air coop tomorrow.

Getting silkie eggs next week to go with the few mine have laid into the bator. Now I get to hatch some cheeps!!! So excited. Everyone gets to play outside tomorrow while we are building so that will make them very happy.

Stony...dont you know a watched pot never boils??? lol chick tv is hard to stop watching. Hope they all hatch!

Ginny--its not too early for the peepers. I have to hens that are great frog hunters and have learned where to look for them on the property. They are relentless and love to eat frogs!

There is now 16 hatched, and 9 left. Air vents are open. Still Air
