NY chicken lover!!!!

Guys and gals, I'd like to present to you my first truly broody girl. She's sitting on five eggs I gave her Sunday night, after she slept in this nest box for two days running and refused to stay on the roost even after being turfed out. She's a dinky little thing for an Orpington, so I only gave her five. She has one of Trucker Chick's eggs, one from my Marans, and three random light brown ones that are probably from the BOs or the Dominiques.

Thus far she has been a dutiful mom - around midday she'll go out and have dinner and drinks in the run for a bit, but she's right back on duty shortly after. Occasionally, being a birdbrain, she has returned to the wrong box and settled down on whatever she found there, so I've had to put her back where she belongs a couple of times, but she now seems to be getting the hang of it and fixing the proper location in her little head. The eggs were definitely cold on both those occasions, but, after doing some reading on the forum, I've opted to leave them, as several BYCers have reported successful hatches even with goofy, directionally challenged broodies.

I thought about moving her to another room, but I've elected to let her stay where she likes it - assuming the eggs are developing, I'll just put up a temporary chick barrier when they're due to hatch so she can get out but they're stuck inside.

Good luck and happy hatching!!

Lynzi: The big one looks like a giant silkie!

Pharmchick: Congratulations on the hatch.

Wonder how the little blind chick is doing?

Picture of the hens out in their temporary fencing. Hey, they can help with a little yard work too, ya know.

This is what I'd like to do all the way down on side of the woods. The BR's keep going into the woods and it makes me nervous.

Hen--tiny yeti's. You crack me up!

Congrats on your mommy. I hope she stays all the way and hatches those babys for you.

Ginny--I am soooo in love.

Wish I were independently wealthy so I could stay home and watch all my babies all day!

Stony--my br and glw go in the woods around our house all the time. However, its only when we are out there with them, on patrol, so to speak. They always look like their crops are going to bust open when they are done. I can certainly understand your nervousness though, especially when chicken is listed first on everyones menu. Certainly has cut down on the tick and bug problems though. My girls eat well so I dont mind being the "rooster" for a couple of hours everyday.

Off to the pharm to earn the chick/chicken feed. Have a good day everyone!

I wish I would have put more chicks under the silkies. They (there are 2 who share the responsibility) take such good care of the babies outside! There are actually 2 tucked under her wing resting while the other to forage...

I can't wait til another goes broody again!!

If I remember correctly your computer has been giving you trouble for a while. It will be good to be able check things again.

Are those buckeye eggs hatching yet?

They go into lockdown tomorrow. Hopefully I have good luck with the whole batch. I haven't been happy with the rates from the frigabator.
Trav stopped at best buy on the way home and got a new computer. Good thing they had a deal going (so many months interest free).

90% of my girls and boys are free range in the truest meaning. no fences period. they cover 2 to 3 acres some days. Sometimes I'm home, sometimes not. They do really well on their own. Cuts way down on my feed bill as well!

That is so CUTE!!!!

So I got stiffed from Clyde's Local Feeds 2 weeks in a row.... well, they got stiffed from whoever they get their chicks from ... I was supposed to pick up 2 of each of the following breeds last Friday: Australorps, Plymouth Rocks, and Light Brahmas .... I called on Friday because they hadn't called me like usual, and he told me that the hatchery cancelled the order

So I ask him if they are coming in at a later date and he said no, it was cancelled. So I ask what breeds they are getting in next week and he said, Gold Laced Wyandottes, Autralorps, yada yada yada ... So I asked him to put the GLW and Aussies on hold for me and throw in another BO ...(and I was planning on grabbing a few more of something)

FF to today ... I call and the chicken guy isn't there but a nice young man that works there tells me that those 2 breeds didn't come in .... that the boss will have to call on Monday to see what the status is ....

This is frustrating.......... I need a hug!
