NY chicken lover!!!!

Ginny--Java girl started a thread for that. Eggs have to be set today or tomorrow. I am doing mine tomorrow.

Featherz--that is a great picture! My cat is also scared of the chicks and chickens. She just likes to watch them but bring her any closer and shes out of there. She is also an indoor cat so no hunting experience for her except bugs.

The terrorists are raising a rukus downstairs this morning. Lots of running and flying and jumping and chirping. Offered them peas yesterday and most were to scared to try them. One barred rock, however, was all over it. She kept running back to grab a pea from my hand then ran around the box chirping about her score. A few others caught on and then it was on like donkey kong! Silly cheeps. Going to try some yogurt today. Dh kicked over a log last night and there were termites under it. He pointed to them and Mean Marge knows to come running if his hand is down because it means a tasty treat. Well, they all came and ate the tasty moving m&ms! Nothing like free protein and pest removal at the same time!

Feels like rain and the radar is showing a big line coming our way later. I hope so. Forecast says rain all week which is fine by me. Supposed to get heavy rain tomorrow so the pump will be set up and prepped just in case its too much in too short a time.

Off to another funfilled day at work (not). Everyone have a good day!
Hey Javagirl!!!! can you post the thread again so this woman doesn't have to back track to subscribe? Thank you, Ginny

Spring cleaning for coop. Had them on deep bedding all winter and have been taking it out little by little this spring. Today cleaned it all out to the floor and rebedded with shavings and hay. They all came in for a look. I think the red star is checking out the nest box and thinking how she now has to make a whole new nest to lay eggs in. 23 eggs today even with all the cleaning out. Might need more egg customers. Good thing we like egg salad around here. :)

THE MOTHER'S DAY HATCH-A-LONG!!!! SET DATE : APRIL 21st or the 22nd

Morning all. I was going to sleep in this morning but some very loud bawking at 630 from the divas in the big coop. They demanded out so out they went. The terrorists are busy raising all kinds of calamity downstairs in their brooder box. Thank goodness the warden put the high security gates on top or we would have them perched all over everything downstairs. This group seems to be growing faster that my divas did when they were little. Is that normal for red sexlinks and rir? The tiny tots are growing as well but are still littles.

Got some wicked heavy rains last night along with thunder and lightening. My chicken dog was is freakout mode. I had to make him lay down next to me so he would calm down. Supposed to get another round tonight with very heavy rains. Hoping I dont have to use my pump. After the hurricane last year, we now have a pump like what the firemen use because I dont want to go through flooding in my basement again, especially now that I have 2 brooder boxes down there.

Good day to make bread and clean since it is crappy out. Loving the rain. Put in 13 silkie eggs for the mothers day hatchalong plus whatever the girls lay today. Good luck to all who have joined!

I hope they are all pullets! Only 4 though...not a very good fertility rate. I collected more after I gave those to you and hatched 7 out of 18, still not terrific. I trimmed up the two remaining girls( 1 buckeye went broody and she is raising the hatch) and started collecting again. Plan to set tomorrow for a mother's day hatch.

I wish you good luck and high fertility!

I would think the growth is normal. Different breeds seem to grow at different rates.
Today is a good day to clean and catch up. I've been going through the week in a fog because of my sinus cold. It's like I have cotton in my ears. I just hope that blowing and coughing out green nastiness is a sign that I'm clearing out to get better.

My broody silkie was out in the yard for a VERY long time yesterday. I am thinking "oh great, one week til hatch and she abandons nest" and walk down to the coop to see what is up. Lo and behold, she had hired a baby sitter....one of the D'uccles was sitting quietly on the nest , all fluffed out, keeping the eggs warm. Was really cute, at least to me. Now Momma Silkie comes back in the coop behind me, cuz she thinks I am a Goddess or something and can work magic, and starts making those noises that say "Yo, get out of my way" and the D'uccle doesn't move ....So I lift the D'uccle out of the nest and the Silkie jumps back in. Case closed, right? Oh no....twice during the day it happens again....I still think it' s cute, the silkie is still annoyed when the babysitter won't go home when she comes back and wants her nest back.

Now I wouldn't mind another broody. But it seems that this D'uccle wants to be a part time mom or a grandmother....give them back when the mom comes home....but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that she gets the fever and sets for me....seems you can never have enough chickens and I am only up to 32 so far.

(and the little ones haven't gotten old enough to tell gender, so I don't know how many are going to freezer camp this fall, so I might only have 28 girls)

Successful trip to the 4-H tack sale, picked up a turnout sheet and blanket for new pony, a couple extra halters, water buckets, heated water buckets (if we ever get electricity up there). Hurried out of there as quick as I could, because last message I had from this morning on the chick purchase was she was leaving around 8am. I planned on meeting in Dryden, half hour drive for me from the Tack Sale, which was 10 mins from home in the other direction. I was on the road over half way to Dryden when I get a call. Her other meetup from New Woodstock was going to meet her in Cortland, sometime this afternoon. No time set. Just would give a call a couple hours ahead. And she doesn't have the Ameraucana available this week anymore. But she will call back when she is ready to leave. I am thinking to hell with her birds, she can keep them.

I am not making another special trip if you can't be decent enough to let me know that there was a change in plans, pay 5.50 apiece for 2 week old chicks that she never sent pictures of even though I had asked several times. Very frustrated.

I've heard of her from a friend of mine, but never met her. She seems to pick up chicks from other breeders for reselling (not sure if that is the case just a theory). She is currently looking for BLRW and she's meeting up with another fellow BYCer on sunday in New Woodstock for some other breed.

My statement was not meant in the negative. I saw it as an advanced form of chicken enabling for those who have trouble finding specific breeds they really really want. People do this with hatchery stock all the time. This would be with higher quallity birds which is a good thing. I am sorry if I offended anyone. I didn't mean to.

If this is my fault for posting before thinking I'm sorry.
