NY chicken lover!!!!

Yikes!! I don't wanna get banned but I was wondering about this and whether there was a lot of it in upstate NY. I have people who take my roos email me so I can chat with them first and so far I've been lucky, but the ones I had to bring to auction you never know about.

In future, anyone you don't know - meet them at a local establishment - I meet most people at a very busy truck stop unless I know you or unless it's just ridiculous (like when I sold 17 guineas - I can just see that handover in a truck stop parking lot LOL). Another option is offer to deliver - then you can see the layout and turn around if you don't like where they are going.

These are not bad suggestions. If you don't like the look of the place you can call them and say someone else showed up and took them. Or better yet tell them you changed your mind.
I had a guy want to meet me at night in a parking garage at the mall. I don't think so and when he called I told him, no way, ain't happening.

I don't mind if folks are going to eat them and say so. I have taken them to auctions. I would expect more dog fighting and cock fighting in the city here.

Good suggestions. But in the future, I'll just keep it word of mouth and be patient.
I did text quite a bit back and forth with directions and he had told me 2 would be butchered and 2 would go to his elderly uncle for pets. It sounded like he was honest.
I'm sure it happens in upstate NY the same as anywhere else. I've never seen or heard about it, but I'm kind of in the boondocks.
Why would you get banned? From what?
Discussion of you know what isn't allowed here. They don't even like it mentioned, from what I have seen. So I won't. :p I'll just say I like my roos to go to humane homes, even if they plan to eat them. I generally rehome them long before they are of an age to be eaten, so I'd prefer they live decent lives until that time. I rarely have to bring birds to the auction, but that's my option if I have to. I haven't met any scary people of the people that have come to pick up my chickens, although a few that have emailed me I had to turn down. I also will google email addresses and names - helps to know who you are dealing with.

Oh, and anyone who no-shows me or flakes I *will* remember and I don't respond to those emails. LOL. Since craigslist is usually anonymous, they don't realize they are emailing the person they stood up last month. =)

Craigslist skeeves me out sometimes. We had to rehome one of our dachshunds before we moved here because they wanted no more than one dog in the home. I listed an ad on CL and you would not believe the amount of people that would respond with nothing but "how much" in the message. DELETE! I got about 20 emails and after extensive conversations back and forth I finally found someone that was perfect for him. So perfect that he's going to be in their wedding. LOL But I had one kid emailing me "Do I get first dibs? I'll pay more..." I couldn't believe it.

If you can't get a good "feel" of the person thru email or phone convo, then like Featherz said, offer to deliver and if you don't like the looks of a place just keep on driving right by and tell them you changed your mind.

Lynzi and featherz, thanks for the rooster discussion. As a result of being included in the feather sexing of my last three chicks, I find there are two roosters. One speckled Sussex who may not know he is a roo, and one americauna who is huge, silvery colors with greenish legs and a full beard. He started crowing at ten weeks and is now thirteen. Maybe a week ago he started to feel the hormones, and if a hen had her back turned he would run up and jump her. They mostly looked displeased and puzzled. But yesterday he jumped on one of the teens, who has been laying eggs, but she didn't like it at all. Two of the older girls went after him, and pecked him off. Such a show of feminine solidarity! We have not had much of that in our coop.

He is gorgeous, and never caused any problems until he started his sex crazed actions. He has a nice crow...only in the morning for a few minutes...

Will he always be this brutish, or will he learn to woo the ladies?

They are pretty much all this way when young, at least in my experience. :) He *should* grow out of it, although only time will tell if he'll be a pain in the butt or a gentleman. :p But pretty much all my teen roos 'get some', very ineptly, whenever they can manage it. My white am roo was jumping ladies while they were dustbathing - they were not amused. I think he's got the hang of it now. :)

Good to know. I'm still mulling what to do about roosters, the SS guy is very nice and respectful of everyone. He looks like he has white stockings on, so proper.

he will probably grow out of it. Will he ever be a gentleman. No. A good roo? Only time will tell.

Wow, you guys have been busy! Do any of you guys use rain barrels? I am thinking of getting a couple.

Is anyone interested in 2, 4 month old Buff Orpington Pullets? They aren't laying yet, but they are such sweeties. We have gone in a different direction with our chicken venture and they are going to be too large for us to keep. PM me if interested.

I really wish I could add another pair to my flock but I just don't see how I would go about doing it. I should have more at a young age and then found homes for 2 or 3. I have the 4, have the room to add 1 or 2 more but I don't have the resources needed to keep them separated to give them time to get used to each other. I got lucky with LadyLibra having a pair of LavOrps for me that were only a few weeks younger than my trio. Now I only have 4 and don't know how (if I wanted to) add just two more that were the same age. They'd have to be small, bantams possibly. My 2 orpington's are the largest. I'd like to get another silkie for my one white silkie to pair up with with (she's so stupid and I feel so bad her for at times LOL) But I don't know. I feel like if I add anything it would take time for them to "fit in"
