NY chicken lover!!!!

OMG - there was an escapee from Survivor - Amish Paradise! Either that or Harry has returned from the dead. He is outside of the run tonight, at least he didn't fly in to harass everyone. Have to pick on Owen (Amish man) that he lost his dinner. Now what to do with the roo if he isn't claimed by nightfall...

Seriously??? That's so funny!

You know how I'm always saying I stop at HD for culled lumber? Well today I stopped by just to see if there was anything I could use? There was all this plywood. 4 X 4' . for $1.01 a board. Some 3/4" and some 1/2". Also some 2 X 2' , for .51 cents. I bet I have enough to build a 4 X 4 coop easy. Got it all for $12.

I did buy some hinges at the flea market and some door hands for $1 each. I know I have enough hinges, cuz I buy extra just in case.

Chickens don't need a high coop so one that is four feet high will be plenty. I figure to build it 4 feet in the front and 3 feet in the back. As long as I can figure out how to construct the door for easy cleaning.

Or I might use it for ducks.

I've got more ideas than money and strength unfortunately.
You are truly full of wonderful ideas!

You want ducks. Let us initiate you into the Duck Cult. Duckehs are awesome.

How about hinging one of the walls of the new coop so that you can swing the whole thing aside like a big door when you need to hoe out the bedding. Give them a regular pop door, but make a giant just-for-cleaning "door" as well.

That was my thought exactly. Now the last ALBC newletter I got had an thing about ducks and how some breeds can lay as many eggs as chickens.

That duck eggs are more nutritious and have less water in them than a chicken egg. Khaki campbells I believe are good layers am I right?

I do have to say I told DW I was done building. I guess I could cut it all out and sell it as a kit. I even have four wheels to put on it. I was going to use them for something else but they would work for this. I use screws for most everything so I could do it. I bet I can figure out how to make a 4 X 4' coop for less than $100.

Morning all. I am back from the North Country even though I didnt want to leave. My fathers funeral was very nice and exactly what he wanted. Its still hard to say goodbye.

My friend did an awsome job taking care of my cheeps on such short notice for so long and she doesnt even have any! She came up twice a day and even let them out to freerange a couple of times while she sat with her grandson watching them. She says they are a hoot to watch. I know that as soon as they saw us pull in and heard our voices, the cacaphony of noise went through the roof. Needless to say, we were missed and everyone had freerange time. Funny thing, they all stayed around wherever we were in the yard. Game cam was checked and no predators were on it so its a good thing.

The boys woke me up this morning crowing. It was nice to hear them. Guess we are getting back to normal, whatever that is.

Rancher--sounds like you have the makings of a new side business! Guess your cheeps and gardens arent keeping you busy enough. lol

Yea for Isabel! I hope Sam is being a good boy to her. Let me know if he needs another talk about how to properly woo a girl.

He is being introduced to the big group today, once I take the roosting bars out of the new coops. DH didn't listen when I said that silkies have trouble with Roosting bars and they are kind of a waste. There were two that came with the coop and their placement is just horrible, so I am taking them out so the chickens can go in FINALLY. There is no water to the little barn so I am hauling water everyday, I'll be glad when they are all together.

Rancher, I have muscovy ducks and they are laying fools. Way friendlier than other duck breeds, too. They were last year's ducklings and laid better than the chickens once they got on a roll. I couldn't weigh the eggs because the scale bottomed out they were so big. Tasty, too.

The processer was just here last weekend and I have 24 ducks in the freezer. However, I have 4 of the original adults that hatched out all the little ones this year and 12 youngsters that I will probably winter over for next spring. If you are going to hatch next spring we could work out a trade for a few young adults so you can try them out.

This is Hunk, the big drake who wags his tail like a puppy and likes to be petted.

This is Brownie and her batch of ducklings.

They are finally outside in the run with a tarp for a little protection until the chicken flocks are integrated and the ducks move into the small coop. My grandson saw a fox in the backyard yesterday so we are being very careful about security.

Forgot to add the muscovies don't make as much mess with their water and are fully feathered and ready to process at 8-9 weeks. They grow so fast it is scary.

ducks are the BEST! We have 8 Runners and 4 Pekins. They are fun, entertaining and just....well the best. Our breeds give us a lot of eggs and entertainment. I'm listening to them play now as I type

I would love to invest in some ducks, but I don't think I'd be able to. That would mean another "coop", a place for water for them to swim in...I think my husband would kill me. I already informed him of the two silkies I'll be adding to the flock in the next couple of days and he was like MORE chickens?!? What do we need more for?!? I can only imagine what his thoughts would be on ducks...
