Well, the dress didn't work. I made the strings to go around her wings too short, then they were too long. I took an old fleece hat and cut a hole in it, but she got her feet up in it and walked out through the neck hole. Maybe by the time her feathers are in I will have come up with a workable design. She has been telling me that she is no haut couture runway chick. Enough for today.

Instead of strings, I have used 1/4" elastic, so there is some play.

Maybe I will try that tomorrow. The hat outfit looked like what I would want if I were a chicken. So cozy. It was black and purple, nice for a barred rock!

She could be. Either that or just doesn't want to lay eggs in the coop. If you see her sitting there staring off into space then it's a good bet she is. At this time of year I hope not for your sake. I've got chicks and what a pain.

The whole purpose of hybrids was to not have broodies but I had a friend who's GC's went broody.

No! I refuse to have chicks! And one of the eggs, I'm quite sure was not hers. It's lighter and smaller than hers are. Hopefully no one else is laying anywhere else!
Besides that, she's a production red, dad is an EE. No idea what I'd get from that! lol I'll keep taking the eggs away.

If she is broody, she's broody. Nothing you can do about it. There is a thread on here about broody hens. They may have a way that will break her. Broodiness is hormonal....try telling someone with PMS to "keep it down". LOL

Broody hens don't care who's eggs they hatch. I had a white silkie hatch 4 black chicks. She is either color blind or blaming the father for the feather colors. Not one single one of the eggs she sat on for 21 days were hers. She's back on another 4 eggs. I'm not sure who's eggs they are or even if they are fertile, but the egg I wanted her to hatch got broken by someone and didn't hatch, so I grabbed all I could find in the coop that day and threw them under the poor thing. She was walking around clucking for her chick and looking in and around the nest box. It was really pitiful. So I put 4 eggs in her box and she climbed in and got comfy. I'll see in 21 days if they were fertile and what hatches.

there is a thread here on broody's. I got so sick of seeing terrible information given by people who only hatched 1 brood of broody chicks I just gave up and unsubscribed from that thread. Here I have 25 to 30 broody's a year and these (biting my tongue ) ,,,,,, people are telling me I'm wrong, mean, whatever. A bunch of (biting my tongue again).

There are a lot of way to break broody's. Depends on your hen what works. I have some I can break just by taking thier eggs. Others require more work. A cage with no nest and air able to reach their chest seems to work. Ice cube easter eggs are supposed to work. Never tried it. The cage works well.

I have 2 hens sitting on eggs now. I've had them (actually one that is sitting now) sit inmid October. Mama hens keeps the babies plenty warm and I've had plenty of newborn chicks in snow with mama hen. So I let them have at it

Morning all!

Chickprincess--we have rir, red sexlinks and br in one coop and run. Every day at least one sexlink (the same one) manages to escape from the 5 foot high run. Yesterday we made it 7 foot high and recovered it with deer netting on top. Hopefully this will keep them all in. I swear that bird does nothing but spend her days plotting escape routes and she has taught two of her buddies to do the same! Oh---I agree with stony. They will be broody when they want to be. Either they run the course with no hatch or go in a cage to cool off. Thats what I do. I let them sit this year as I had chicks in the cage. They sat on nothing and were okay with that. I just kicked them out every day so they would eat, drink, wander around for a bit and poop before they ran back in to sit again. I am hoping that my glw elanor goes broody again this coming spring as she will be my incubator/hatcher for new chicks.

Went out at 615 this am to let everyone out and they werent even up yet! Slackers! Now they are all up crowing their fool heads off. I managed to get a hand on my biggest rir roo Hane and what I thought was just feathers is really body mass. That boy is one big boy!!!! I must say he is a very good, very polite and very respectful roo. If, however, something tries to go for the girls, he will definately do some damage and put a serious hurt on that critter! Olaf is a bit smaller but still big. I am hoping for good chicks come spring.

Sat out in the sun with my newest silkies yesterday afternoon. I think we all needed it. They were sunbathing and grazing while I just sat in my chair and soaked it up. It felt good after all the rain and dampness we had. Did a little sprucing up on their coops. I bought buckets so I can give the older ones a bath on my day off. Watched a couple of youtube videos on how to do it and clip nails. This should be interesting and messy!
