NY chicken lover!!!!

Disrespect is definitely it, also ignorance, and it isn't just about chickens. I once had a friend who had a son who grew very large very young. I had a Newfoundland dog, her comment was oh great my son could ride your dog like it was a horse. She was serious, she thought that would be a fun activity for a visit. I haven't seen her in a while, and that visit never happened.

Morning all. Glad to hear everyones cheeps are okay after the runins with family. The falcon was back yesterday afternoon shortly after I let out my silkies and the big girls (hen group). The girls ran under the trees and i was in the yard right next to my silkies armed with my rake. The falcon left after a while since there was no chance of a free meal happening at our place.

Adorava--I guess you never found your missing two birds. Sounds like you are doing well building your flock though.

Button bucks are nice to see but I prefer to take the older bucks or does. Imo, its good to let them grow up and see how they mature and pass on their genes. Oh, had another bear pass through again. This time it was a youngster. Instead of a camera, he grabbed his pellet rifle this time. (He had been after some red squirrels earlier) At least he is upgrading what he grabs on his way out the door! The bear didnt stop moving, just kept running through. The terrorists and the hens were still out freeranging at that point as well so I am glad it kept moving.

Chicken count? 42 of which 5 are roosters.
Those darn hawks! They've been hanging around my house too.

No, I never found them.

I was looking at pics of Sam the other day, he would have made a great breeding rooster and a great protector with his rooster attitude. :) His type and color was just beautiful, such a shame, it still hurts my feelings. I think DH felt really bad about it, he's been very helpful with chicken chores, including gathering the dry leaves for the chicken run. (not the wet ones...the dry ones) Finding another nice breeding rooster has been quite the venture. I have one coming in tomorrow, I have been looking since Sam and Mille were MIA, so I am hoping for the best. I have so many blue cockerels from good bloodlines that need to be rehomed, but I needed a breeding rooster now. Geri sent me a couple of gorgeous black cockerels as well, I will be holding onto them. Let me think, total males....9 and a couple I am unsure about.

I know that you said that you use leaves in your runs? We have an overabundance of of leaves so I would rather use something that I don't have to pay for. Is there anything that I need to be careful about with the leaves?

Now that is bad..."oh, hey can I come over and ride your dog?" Seriously? No!!

Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend! It's been a while since I've been on. Had some drama here this weekend with the inlaws here. Came home from the mall to find out they had the bright idea of letting my silkies out-I was soooo PO'ed!!! The orps weren't out so of course they let them out AFTER they let the silkies out. My big lavender Roo came over and chased Pearl, (Tabs white Silkie, I just got a month or two ago) into the woods. All this after I explained to my father inlaw why I don't always let the silkies out to free range, and how they cannot be let out the same time as my orps! My kids know better too so when I came in and questioned what the heck happened both my kids turn towards my mother inlaw and say "Grammie told us, it was her idea"! Are you kidding me!?! Pearl was found thank goodness! My father inlaw mowed my entire lawn the next day to make up for it. LOL I was more mad at my MIL than anyone else. Just the fact that I came in asking what happened and she responded very carelessly "it was my fault sorry" before Pearl was even found ticked my right off. Like oh, sure it's just a chicken! I'll get over it. UGH So glad she is gone.
As far as chicken count goes, you all still have me beat. I have my 6 - 4 hens and 2 roos. No chicken math or down sizing here! ;-)

I have learned that most folks don't know much about chickens. For them they come in two colors , white and red. Which is why most folks order leghorns and RIR's the first time out. Many don't research them before hand. IMO.
Non chicken people don't really care either. Unless it's their interest they couldn't care less about learning.
I've had to explain about stress and feed and many other things. They only know what they see on TV and in movies. But the same goes for other animals too. Except of course Dogs and Cats. Lord have mercy people spend millions on cats and dogs and IMO get little of value out of them.
To many people aren't animal lovers. This is why the shelters are full. Attending a large church I've put a few people in their place about the welfare of animals. FYI The bible does not teach that we can do whatever we want with animals! I'll stop there.

So what to do? Educate anyone who will listen for two minutes. If you have customers give them literature with their first order of eggs. I high light the important stuff. I go to the UPS store for cheaper copies. I now have about 4 or 5 pages from different sources.

Take care and be well,

Rancher soon to be in AL Hicks (by the grace of God)

I am sorry for your loss. I've considered putting a scare crow out in the yard and I will plant more shrubs for the birds to find shelter under. I surround my Ornamental grasses with low fencing so the chickens can't scratch them out of the ground. I hope when they get bigger they will flow over and hide the fencing.

As long as you dont use any chemicals on your property, you can rake them right into their runs. Mine love it and spend hours going through them looking for goodies to eat. I bag only dry leaves. If you bag them wet, they will rot and be useless for winter. I also bag pine needles as well. I rake them off my road and my neighbors pave driveways (as they dry quick on there) and bag them as well for winter use. Last year I used 7 bags between two coops. I have 4 coops this year so I will try to double or triple that. Oh, dh has been sawing up the pine tree he cut down so I have been scraping up all the sawdust and putting it in my silkie run. They love it. I love freebies! The best part is in the spring when I do a big cleanout of the runs, I have some very nice gardening material thats all composted. I just put it on one side of the composter to finish off for fall.

Rancher--Amen and amen. Best thing I ever did was make up that handout from all the info you sent me. People read it and tell me how much they learned. Enjoy your visit to Al.

Adorava--sent you a pm.

Aria--got your post and message. Forwarded to Adorava.

Going to try bathing my silkies this pm. I keep saying it but now I really am going to do it. I will post pics if I can get any. Wonder how messy this is going to get? lol

My MIL just really has no respect for other's people's things. We crate our dog - we've crated any dog we've ever had. She's the type that if I told her to keep the dog in his crate over night or while they were gone (if they were watching him for us) she won't. But she'll be the first to complain he peed on the floor while they were gone. She drives me crazy. And just like you said about people thinking chickens come in red and white - she comes over the first time and sees them and says "I didn't know chickens came in that color or could look like that (referring to my silkies)" But don't worry, I told her I don't know where the silkies came from, they were beamed down here from space. ;-)
