NY chicken lover!!!!

We did fine up here. Didn't even lose power, which I was very grateful for since I have eggs due tomorrow! Maybe a couple downed branches, and the lights flickered a bit, but that was all. Everyone was locked up tight, so no losses.

On an unrelated note, is anyone interested in some Welsh Harlequin ducklings? I have seven that need new homes. They're really good egg layers when they're grown, and they're prettier than pekins ;) Although pekins are pretty great too :p

Does anyone know...
My australorps all came from Cackle hatchery at 1 day old. Can I breed them, or is there too much chance of interbreeding? Or am I overthinking this?
Hatcheries hatch hundreds to thousands of chicks per hatch, so the chance of yours all being related to one another is almost nonexistent. Breed away!

Our town administrator's Facebook page states that at one point we had 13 roads here blocked by downed trees, and there were power lines down here and there, but we were fortunate enough to be spared. We lost a couple of small tree limbs, and the lights flickered, but otherwise nothing. The news coming from the coast is awful - what a mess.

the weather did ease up for a bit this afternoon, I had the gang out for about an hour, and it was fairly easy to get them all back in and separated. then i went back out at 5/5:50 to check and the divider was pushed open! they were all mingling except the banty, Peach, she was in the apple crate coop by herself. I did bring her out to the main part to see if maybe she would eat or drink or just dash back in the coop... she ate and drank, and hopped up on one of the roosts with one of her bodyguards, Archie. he's 4 times her size, yet tries to get underneath her, like he's her chick... the other young boy, 'Si, was mingling with the older Roo, Royce and his ladies. Royce was dancing, but nothing more... so I took the divider out. at roost, the older 7 were roosting in the store bought coop as usual, and the Princess and her Bodyguards were roosting in the corner of the main room rather than the apple coop, but that's ok. it's just shy of 2 months since I added them to the flock and the merge is complete. I don't think it will be necessary to cull Royce after all. he's an excellent guardian, and quite a gentle fellow. I'm not inclined to use him for breeding, he's beautiful, but as an EE, he's beardless and muffless, and I really like those features... but to breed him for his temperament is a real consideration.

I don't suppose anyone has Guinea keets or eggs? My daughter found a deer tick on her back last week. When we had guineas we didn't have ticks or ground bees, but now 2 years after no guineas they are back....

I hate to wait until spring, but guess I'll have to.

Don't chickens eat ticks? We are having trouble with ticks, first time in the 10 years we have been here. I thought it was because they had migrated here, but also because the chickens hardly get to free range since the fox issue. Are guinea fowl the best for ticks, or the only for ticks?

At least you can come here and know we all understand.

I am sad for your loss. I understand.

DW says everything is fine in Syracuse. Just some wind and rain but nothing to worry about. The weather here in AL is cool but not cold. It's funny to hear people complain about how cold it is. The 60's cold?

I saw there is a chicken auction house not far from here and I hope to go. Perhaps this weekend. Not that I could bring anything back home. I did bring back eggs once but I'm not up to hatching at this time of year. It would have to be a gold egg laying goose for me to do so.

my Sumatra's free ranging everywhere have virtually eliminated the ticks in the yard and also have eaten every ground hornet. I watched them stand over the hole and eat them until they were all gone
