October Hatch-A-Long 2017

The eggs are from My Pet Chicken. I was drawn in by the variety they offer, against my better judgement to stay local.

The bunny is very friendly. A friend of a friend did an intoxicated impulse buy, literally, yesterday and was rehoming the bun today. If she only just came from a pet store, she's still a baby and seems very calm and well socialized. She came with a cage, timothy hay, a hay feeder, food, a bowl and a water bottle, but no bedding and nothing to attach the water bottle to the cage. Yup, someone was intoxicated. The cage had never been set up and the rabbit was in a hard cider box with holes cut in it. How did they even get her home from the pet store??? If she stays, I'm going to call her Cider, lol. I'm still hoping my son's teacher takes her.

I just had to share. If I can't get excited about eggs, I have to get excited about something. If these eggs take any longer, I'm going to have entirely unintentional Halloween chicks.

Dang it, I just realized Monday is a holiday. I won’t get these eggs until Tuesday at the earliest. Time to read up on staggered hatches. I’m not going to wait to start these ones and lose some for the sake of eggs whose hatch rate is likely to be low anyway.

I went ahead and set the orchard eggs. I picked up each one the day I bought them to ensure they sat in the carton the right way, but nonetheless, one cracked and stuck to the carton, so I set 23. Two more look bad just from the outside, brittle and rough to the touch and with odd groove marks. I strongly suspect they’re infertile but I’m giving them a chance until day 10 just in case. The others look good, though I don’t candle at this point.

I’m pretty disappointed about the other set of eggs. They’re expensive enough that I’ll try to hatch them anyway. I agreed to these conditions, I’m just bummed this is how they work this. I should have gone with the guaranteed shipping within two days since I’m not picky about what I get. Ah, well. This is the life. It’s messy and we make mistakes and learn for next time.

Today is day 14 for my eggs! Haven't thrown out any yet! I candled on day 3 and 7, going to candle again today or on day 16 so that I know if I have to throw some out before lockdown. They all still had completely disconnected air cells last time I candled. I did see what appeared to be the beginnings of development in 2-3 of them last time I candled, that gives me hope! I finally got the humidity stable.

I'd love to give my broody some eggs but our setup isn't really suited towards keeping them warm in the winter when mom decides to dump them at 4 weeks. Plus I may be over capacity currently

Putting my eggs on lock down today, Day 17. It's sooner than I have in the past. Since most are bantam and all are shipped I'm trying this early lock down and hatching upright method hoping increase the hatch rate. And be ready in case of early hatchers. 21 eggs out of 40 made it to lock down. Exciting!

The TJ eggs and the SBEL look to be a bust. Not a thing on early candling at 3.5 days. Some frighteningly clear. Took the liberty of ordering up 15+ assorted Marans eggs to compensate.

The local eggs are all showing signs of life. So 8 Welsummers, 2 OE and 3 Welsummer crosses are working it well.
