October Hatch-A-Long 2017

Pics
Well, it's 16 days and it seems I still have 5 of 8 eggs with definite movement. 2 look to be dead in shell/non-movers and the EE egg I still can't tell a thing. The 2 that appear dead I have put in separate egg cups just in case. There is no odor or anything.

The 5 movers are all Barred Rock (hen) and dad could be RIR or EE.

Getting excited :fl. I won't be home on day 19, so hope no early hatchers.

One down 4 to go!!!

First time hatching here. I set 33 eggs 2 quit on me around day 7. On day 18 which was Saturday I put them on lock-down and candled them all 31 were moving.
Sadly there was an accident putting them back in the incubator and 2 eggs were cracked. :-( I put them in an other incubator and watched them, but they didn't make it.
On the bright side 4 were born on the 19th day and 6 more pipping. Is it normal for them to hatch on the 19th day?
Happy hatching everyone.

Not usually. What happens to promote early hatching could be eggs exposed to warmer temps (and eggs incubated at lower temps take longer to hatch) OR during the egg gathering process these older eggs were kept warm enough for enough period of time that their embryo had advanced a tad more than their brethren. However, lockdown happens on the 18th day to compensate for the humidity needed to keep chicks optimal for hatching. So maybe the 18th day timeline to compensate for early hatching?

In any event, you're having a great hatch rate thus far. Sounds like you'll have oodles of chicks!

I have 4 large mixed duck eggs and 2 call duck eggs on day 17 with strong life signs. :) Started with 5 large mixed (runner crosses a friend "gifted" me) and 12 calls, 3 early quitters in the calls, 7 with nothing, 1 with no development in the large mixed. Hoping to get some siblings for DuckDuck, the pekin who hatched last month (the only survivor of 16, 15 calls and 1 pekin, split between a broody hen and incubator; tried moving the only two with development from incubator to under the hen because it seemed "more natural" and they quit :( the third under momma hen that had been doing well died around day 23, probably when DuckDuck hatched - it probably got chilled). So fingers crossed, this is my first incubation hatch to completion!!

I put my 8 eggs on lockdown today and raised the humidity. Oh, I removed them from the cut-down cartons and laid them down with largest part of air cell up. I did not candle them again. Last check I think I still had at least 5 movers.

I will be gone tomorrow night, so hope that the incubator will hold a good temp and humidity. I've asked my mother to check on them, but she isn't very reliable. Keeping my fingers crossed.
