October Hatch-A-Long 2017

I ended up with 8 chicks out of 11 eggs I set (half of them have feathered legs:love) One externally piped and then died and then two eggs haven't done anything. I candled them but couldn't see anything. So I put them back in the incubator to sit or another day or two.

My chicks are 2 weeks old tomorrow. They are gorgeous. The blue one and the tiny barred are my favorites. 3 of the cochins are feathering out black although they have slightly different colored down. Color may change as they grow out . 3 appear calico colored and look super fancy. The Marans are so sweet and gentle. What photo shoot would be complete without a photo bomb my gold sexlink?

Would you believe they had neither cheese cloth nor shelf liners at the grocery store? This area is quite a bit more affluent than where we moved from. They have a wine bar, in the grocery store, but don't carry those things. Apparently our new neighbors like their expensive food already prepared and don't need them. Uf!

So at any rate, no shelf liner. I haven't used one in the past, but my previous incubator had a plastic grid and not a metal one. Hopefully they'll still be okay. It was just a nice thing to have.

I candled again before locking down and removed four: the two I had suspected earlier that were just not fertile, one definite quitter with a blood ring and one that wasn't so obvious but was just way too small to be a viable chick. Counting the one that cracked in transport, that leaves me with 19, including the bantam egg.

I'm not really sure what happened with my countdown. I checked here and saw that I put them in the incubator on the 7th. That means the 21st day is October 27th. I'm not sure why I thought it was the 28th instead, and I'm not sure how to interpret what the incubator says is left since it counts down and not up. I wonder because, as I was doing the candling, a chick was peeping at me! I've only done this twice before, but I've never had a chick peeping at lockdown, whether that was day 18 or 19. I really hope I haven't left lockdown too late! More issues with temperature consistency between the thermometers, too, but if 19 made it this far, hopefully they'll make it to the end.

On a related note, I started my very first batch of fermented feed tonight AND my mother hen heating plate came in today, just in time!
