October Hatch-A-Long 2017

Just so I know next time -- what is the clear jelly/white poo stuff in this photo? Is it normal? Chick is doing great!

Asking once more because I'd really like to know. Anyone know?

Start of day 20. Three hatched yesterday, all from blue eggs. Two typical EE types and this super dark chick with a dark beak and legs. I moved them to the incubator just now where they got to inaugurate my new heating plate, which works just as it is supposed to. I have one more looking like it’s staring to zip and several more pips.

I don't have a good answer but it's normal. Like a 1st poop. Just make sure it comes off cleanly. It's difficult to remove if it dries on. I've also had the stringy part wrap around a leg. Could easily have dried and turned into a mini tourniquet cutting off circulation! I caught it when he was still wet. Had the chick fluffed out I don't know if I would have caught it :(

Second wave of hatching underway today. My Cuckoo Bluebars are pipping and popping. The first one out was a beautiful silver blue. The second was..... a chipmunk?

I sincerely doubt this will feather out blue.
I think I got sent a Cuckoo Bluebar x Cuckoo Bluebar cross, which means hybrid on hybrid equals whatever's in the gene pool. If so, this is probably a throwback to the CCL in the mix.

I am more amused than upset. Not the first time I've been sent wonky "oops" eggs.

Thank you -- normal is good. It fell off right away and not stuck on stuff. Just a quick wipe to clean off incubator.

#4 hatched a short while ago and its cheeping is driving the egg next to it crazy. I count eight more with pips of various kinds now.

Any thoughts on the small black chick? If the orchard had a bantam hen, no reason to think they might not have a bantam rooster, too. Egg was blue, so half EE. Small because it may be half bantam, or small because it hatched early? That other early Hatcher is a monster!

Latest chick is yellow, from a speckled tan egg.
