Since I didn't see any external pips in the unhatched eggs I decided to candle them.

As I reported earlier in the thread, Egg #1 is not developed -- though, weirdly, it still has some visible veins. I suspect it quit a week ago. Egg #24, which I thought had looked underdeveloped despite having seen it move on day 18, looks even more wrong now with some weird, blood-like spots in various places. I would be very surprised if it hatches.

Egg #11 is full and dark with a strong air cell. I didn't see an internal pip or any movement, but I also didn't see any reason that I might not wake up to one more chick tomorrow.

The hatched babies are outside in their brooder, all cozy and comfortable under the brooder plate and giving soft, comfortable peeps when I shine a light in to check on them.

I checked on the babies when I woke up just before sunrise. Coldest part of the day, but they're snuggled happily and quietly under their brooder plate and started coming out when they saw the light from my headlamp.

The brooder guard is going to make it easier to capture them all and re-dip their beaks in the water later today.

That's surprising. I haven't had to dip one beak in water.. after one finds, it they all find it.

Well, it was barely before sunset when they went into the brooder so they didn't have time to explore. I really hadn't wanted to leave them in the incubator overnight with so many chicks in that rather confined space.

Perhaps they'll find everything now that it's daylight, but I know they were pecking at the feed on the paper towels so I want to make sure they find the water promptly.

Oh to have a brooder full of all light colors!!! I cannot wait!
Everytime I candle the first ones to hatch - cochins- I forget to see what colors they r supposed to be...I just love this process!
2 grandsons coming over today 4 yrs old and 18 months old...the 4 year old.has been doing this with me the past year so he totally gets the process!
18 month old gets super mad cuz I won't show him the babies...he LUVS all the chickens! I'm beyond grateful for this amazing experience and opportunity with them all!

Wish I could be apart of the baby chick fest, this all looks so adorable.
My broody hen’s eggs are, as far as i’ve counted, set to hatch in two days. She’s got 7 eggs under her at this point but one looked a little behind last I checked. I’m quite excited, and she’s still been a very devoted broody this time around. My olive egger eggs are due in 6 days.

Anddddddddddd, six chicks have hatched. Mom left the nest which I removed (nasty), she's bedding down in a layer of hay with her babes.. One lil red chick is already nestled under her in this pic.. 6 chicks, 4 moms. Partridge and Red chicks are sired by General Lee, Grey and black fuzzballs were sired by Barney (midget BCM) The hatching hen is a cochin mix (red cochin momma) along her sister Cheyenne. I'm guessing the red chicks are Cheyenne's as she's white with a feather pattern like lacing.
