October Hatch-A-Long

I was going to have some more October chicks in, but then one of our dogs (her name is Diesel, and she is a real nuisance. I want my parents to put her down 'cause she has got some hip problems and now is picking on the chickens for no reason!) ate all of the eggs!

Can the day go any slower? I am hanging out to candle the eggs on day 10 (when I will also weigh them) and I just cant wait :weee :celebrate Anyone else weigh their eggs? I was going to mark the air sacs but I find weighing easier, provided I can get the right equation. Can anyone tell me if I have this is correct for me to track the correct weight loss?
I usually take the day 0 weight then calculate the hatch day weight ( day 0 - 14%) and draw a line between the two on a graph. If you then plot the weights of the eggs as you go if they are on the line great, above it the humidity is too high, below its too low.

Well couldn't help myself. Candled the three eggs in the incubator last night on day 4.

One has a hairline crack I can't see without the light down the pointy end
One looks like it's getting a red ring near the yolk
And last one couldn't see anything.

Will give it a few more days and look again.

I usually bump my hens off a night to candle the eggs and make sure she eats and drinks. My hens usually sit on the ground next to me clucking away while I molest her precious eggs. :)

I'm trying to be strong and hang out till I know I will see something with her eggs :). Figure I'll work out what I'm supposed to be looking at with the incubator ones first !

Our broody didn't come off the nest at all that I could tell for the first week (she also sat while I waited for eggs) but last two mornings she has come out by herself when my son has unlocked the coop. It was a relief to know she was eating at last :)

I woke up this morning and the power must have just gone out! Incubator was still around 99 degrees. It was off for a while and since these duck eggs ( I only had 2 developing ) were going to go under my broody eventually, I figured today was a good day to do it! I distracted her with some food and snuck them under her. She was a little suspicious but then settled back down. This is her third time being broody this Summer with no babies so I really really really hope they hatch!

I ordered Silkie eggs for Sept hatch and only 2/8 are developing. So I ordered more for the October hatch. They arrived today and only 2/7 have detached air cells. They were a little cold when arrived so hopefully tha doesn't effect them. Have them sitting in the carton fat end up for a few days so the ones with detached air sacs have a chance to attach again. I hope to get 3 hatches out of this set but only time will tell :)
